The Broadway Theatre Committee, the Union, and You
 Aug 21 2018, 10:09:58 PM

Hey all. For those of you who are interested in the business side of Broadway, particularly in the pit, I recorded a chat with a couple of friends about whether or not (and when) to join the musician's union. Chris Reza serves as Vice-Chair of the Broadway Theatre Committee, the liaison between the Broadway Musicians Community and the Associated Musicians of Greater New York, American Federation of Musicians Local 802. Chris Carroll is the Chief of Staff and formerly the Political and Communications Director for AFM Local 802, overseeing political, legislative, and communications departments. We specifically talked about the role of the Broadway Theatre Committee, the reasons that one might join the union, the nature of collective bargaining and contract negotiations, and the importance of raising the wage floor. If you're at all interested in this kind of stuff, let me know!

Thanks so much for the kind message! The highest compliment I can receive is for someone to share this conversation with someone else who could really use it. I sub and have subbed on a few shows myself, and if you or your friend want to chat, I am always available via e-mail at thesoundmindpodcast@g

The Life of a Touring Pit Musician on Hamilton

Hey Broadway heads! My good friend Sarah Haines is the violin/viola doubler on the US tour of Hamilton. I thought you might like to hear a conversation we had a couple of weeks back while she was in Cleveland. Among the topics we discussed were the touring lifestyle, musical styles relevant to a Broadway pit career, the importance of taking every opportunity possible, and of course, her favorite tunes from Hamilton. :) I think it was a great talk, particularly for anyone interested in a career in Broadway performance, or for someone who wants to know what life is like underneath the stage. Let me know what you think!
