Best understudy you've ever seen?
 May 13 2019, 12:08:15 PM

This goes all the way back to 1989 . . . Ruthie Henshall in for Claire Moore as Ellen in “Miss Saigon”. She was electrifying and the audience went wild after her solo song. No surprise when she went on to greater things.

Best Grizabella in CATS?

Didn't see her, and I know she's not one of the choices, but Gay Marshall on the French Cast Recording is amazing! Best show version of the song in my opinion.

Roles they DIDN'T get....
 May 19 2011, 06:32:03 PM
I remember reading in "Variety" many moons ago that "A Doll's Life" was set to star George Hearn and Patti LuPone.

Someone also told me that Kander & Ebb really wanted Patti to star opposite Chita Rivera in "The Rink". I have no idea why she turned them down.

I guess you could file the above under "roles they turned down".

re: Patti Lupone At Les Mouches - Distortion

>Keep in mind that there probably isn't a master in existence or no one can trace it.<

This CD was made possible due to Patti's Les Mouches musical director, David Lewis, who kept masters of the cabaret act. I think he's listed as co-producer or something like that on this release. Anyway, I did see Patti at Les Mouches the night before she won her "Evita" Tony. Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were in the audience that night as well. I'm really looking forward to reliving some terr

re: Patti LuPone at Les Mouches on CD!

Same here, PalJoey. I dragged my Dad to see Patti at Les Mouches the night before she won her "Evita" Tony way back in 1980. What a night! The show was sold out so we stood at the bar behind a velvet rope. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber were in the audience as well. What a performance and Patti belted to the rafters! Heaven Is A Disco indeed. Oh, my Dad became a fan as well that night. Great memories and I look forward to reliving them again.

Ok....another question. What's the English title for the CD (black cover with colorful Japanese lettering) on the second page between the "Evita" and "A Chorus Line" CDs? Thanks again!

Can someone please help me identify a CD (2nd page on link below/grey cover/man holding umbrella) in the enclosed link supplied by Baine (thanks!): http://www.amazon.co.jp/s/ref=nb_ss_m?__mk_ja_JP=%83J%83%5E%83J%83i&url=search-alias%3Dpopular&field-keywords=%8C%80%92c%8El%8BG&Go.x=13&Go.y=9

I purchased this CD from amazon.co.jp and I love it! Unfortunately, it's all in Japanese so I'd be interested in an English title or any other info available. Thanks!

re: Who was LuPones original alternate in Evita?
 Oct 22 2007, 03:10:40 PM
>In 1980, The New York Times did a short review of alternates and standbys in current shows and they reviewed Terri Klausner's Eva.<

Hey, I remember that article! It was written by Frank Rich before he became the lead NYT drama critic.

And the Prince version of "Evita" was incredibly dance heavy....not. LOL. Too bad his review didn't make Terri a Broadway star. She was fine in the role but lacked charisma

re: Who is the Current 1st Lady of the American Musical?

>"Christine Ebersole has been climbing the ladder for 10 years."<

LOL. I remember seeing Ms. Ebsersole in the chorus of "On the 20th Century" back in 1978 - almost 30 years ago!!!!! That's a pretty high ladder she has been climbing all these years.

re: London EVITA Recording
 Dec 7 2006, 06:37:32 AM
I played it once and put it away. Patti, Elaine, Flo, Pia, Rocio and the amazing "Claudia" from the Brazilian cast recording sing circles around Elena. I wonder if she'll come to NYC with this particular production? Her review in The New York Times was not great and even compared her to LuPone in an unfavorable light. Link, anyone?

Great news!
re: Leslie Kritzer is Patti LuPone
 Sep 6 2006, 08:14:33 PM
I was there too! Heaven IS a disco! Do you think Leslie will do Patti's choreography (bump and grind) on top of the piano for "Squeeze Me"? Can I sit on your piano, indeed!

PS I saw Patti at Les Mouches the night before she won the Tony. Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice were in the audience. Fun night.

re: Evita Cd

Am I the only one disappointed with the new "Evita" recording? Elena Roger's charisma just doesn't transfer well to Cd. The voice is strong but raspy and unsure of pitch at times. The accent doesn't bother me as I've always wondered what Charo would have sounded like singing this score. (Anyone remember when Charo's name was actually brought up as possible casting for the '79 Broadway production?) The so-called "new" orchestrations seem to be a mix of the Madonna soundtrack, the concept recordin
re: What Patti LuPone Really Thought of Madonna's 'Evita' movie....
 Aug 15 2006, 08:51:17 AM
Another "Evita", Florence Lacey, in a recent Playbill interview, basically feels the same way as Patti regarding Madonna's performance (click link below). Lowered keys or not...I thought Madonna was, well, boring in the role. She has "dead eyes" that never change from scene to scene.....a real snooze.
