Is it possible to understand all of what's going on in a show if you just listen to the cast recording and have never seen the show?

I keep on hearing that someone needs to go and in and clean up the show. And how it's been getting worse and worse since the OBC. I've never seen the stage show and was wondering what's wrong with it?
