re: San Francisco's Magic Theatre is Saved;

Jan 13, 2009 — 8:59:46 PM

I never implied that there was a contest. The Magic was given a grant. Both companies are nationally-renowned, and both were saved, garnering over $400,000 each from all over the US and Canada in under two weeks, which is so awesome, and proof that even in these time, people do care, and that theatre is alive and well. That's all.

San Francisco's Magic Theatre is Saved; Thanks to Challenge Grant, It Raises More Than Shakespeare Santa Cruz! $450,000!

Jan 13, 2009 — 12:50:32 PM

Magic Theatre raises $450,000 in a little over a week! Shakespeasre Santa Cruz over $400,000 in ten days! We did it! http://www.magictheatre.org On behalf of the Board and staff of Magic Theatre, thank you. We are deeply grateful to our community of supporters--subscribers, artists, audience members, and other theatre-lovers--here and all over the country, who made contributions to keep our doors open. We are thrilled that we will be producing Tough Titty-- the kind of play that comes along p...

Instead of buying that $100 concert ticket, donate to local theatre! There will be plenty of other concerts this summer season, but there is only one Paper Mill; or one SF Magic Theatre; or one North Shore; or one Palo Alto Players ... etc, etc.

It is definitely scary ... and my response would be to just do as much as you can, you know? Don't just get scared and back away; instead, Intern and/or volunteer at non-profits; help to brainstorm strategies for getting more money. Donate as much as you can to these awesome and local theatres. Even, say, $20 a month to one non-profit company is $100 in five months, you know? Create those positive ripple effects; often times, they do so much more to sustain a long-term outlook. And that is ve...

There have been mistakes made with theatres all over the US; many having to do with management. However, yes, one must look at the big picture ... this is local theatre; renowned, not-for-profit slices of Americana. Many of these are very historic companies, and for this reason alone, they need to be preserved. Please give what you can; I have never even been to this theatre, yet am still considering making a large donation.

This so terrible; I am very upset. I saw this coming a long time ago ... extremely terrible things happening as the result of tiny negative ripple effects in society. Everything is connected; think about it. A friend and I are working to preserve and expand an extremely tiny theatre company in San Jose; I am actively promoting the cause to save SF's landmark Magic Theatre; I donate $85 every month to Theatreworks. Please don't just take theatre for granted, guys, and just purchase tix and aud...

http://www.magictheatre.org/ At the latest count, they were up to nearly $294,000. Posted on the cause's official Facebook page the other day: From the Magic: Since its initial appeal nine days ago, San Francisco's nationally acclaimed new plays theatre, MAGIC THEATRE, has raised more than $250,000. MAGIC was just awarded an anonymous challenge grant from a leading national arts supporter to encourage the theatre to meet and exceed its fundraising goal so that Magic has the resources to conti...

Appeal from Octavio Solis: http://www.magictheatre.org/season0809/season0809_solis.htm Like a moth to the flame, I was drawn to the Magic of San Francisco. I discovered in Dallas of the mid-80's that I was a playwright, and craved to find the theatres and workshops that would test and develop my skills. By then, the legend of the Magic Theatre loomed large as a proving ground for new work, as the home base of luminaries like Sam Shepard and Michael McClure, so my wife and I chose California f...

An appeal from Paula Vogel: http://www.magictheatre.org/season0809/season0809_vogel.htm Dear Friends, Romans, Countrymen: Some eleven years ago Circle Rep closed its doors on Sheridan Square, after 27 years of operation. A tiny space, with 165 seats, the place had an enormous impact on American Theatre. Not a week goes by that I don't think of the gaping hole in our field that disappeared under free market pressures, the short-sighted way that we "fund" the making of theatre in this country. ...
