Gypsy- first preview- what happened in the audience?
 Mar 3 2008, 11:31:30 PM
Did something fall from the mezzanine and land on an audience member? There was a big commotion and someone gasping and crying. It happened right before Rose's Turn.

On another note, the show was fantastic, even at 3 hours long. Great cast!

re: John Doyle to direct 'BARNUM'

Well there was a big sign posted at the chorus call today at Telsey that said PRODUCTION CANCELLED. It's disappointing to me, the opportunity lost.
All the negativity on this board is depressing!!!

Albeit a bit late to reply, here are my 2 cents. I am very excited for another Doyle production. I am a singer/actor who plays many instruments and I see it as ABOUT TIME I had any sort of upper hand in an audition. Also, Doyle's Sweeney Todd was absolutely mesmorizing! I loved it! Company didn't work as well, in my opinion, but Barnum seems like a perfect fit for actors/musicians.

i agree, wickedrentq! I have no expectations of the party, and I'm just happy to be going at all!

i won the lottery, too! Any speculation where the seats will be? Any chance of the after party being included? Info on the websites is vague.
Hopefully they will release some seats to TDF at the last minute for other people who can't pay the $250 ticket minimum. Producers don't like to have empty seats, even at benefit concerts. I went to Christine Ebersole's Benefit Concert through TDF. I'm excited!!

re: Les Miserables- first preview review

Regarding Daphne and "I Dreamed a Dream", I agree that she is a good actress, but can we just cut to the chase, please. Acting is essential on Broadway, but in a song of this range (both emotional and vocal), shouldn't it be performed by a great actress who can also raise the roof with a soaring, powerful and healthy voice? You can't tell me there are not at least 10,000 women willing and able to do that here in NYC. I understand how casting works, I love Daphne and her previous work, but I a
Would someone explain the difference, swing vs. standby?
 Oct 4 2006, 01:04:55 PM
I am not sure what the exact difference is between a swing and a standby. I am pretty sure an understudy is a cast member understudying a role, but swings and standbys don't come from the cast? Do swings and standbys have to attend the show or just be available at all times? Thanks for any info!!
re: Playbill: color vs. black and white
 Aug 30 2006, 02:12:25 PM
I have always wondered this too! I assumed it was budget related, but even black and white playbill covers still use yellow on the front, and almost always color on the back. How much money could it possibly save? The color covers are so much better!
re: Legit singing on Broadway

HOUFlip04, thanks for your great response and insightful thoughts. I actually am a baritone that can sing very high, and don't mind doing it. I work very hard to stretch myself, it's just that what I hear on Broadway now is not a whole lot of good singing, high or low. I guess what I am hoping for most is a return to a singer's broadway (that also demands acting chops, of course). Vocal technique in ways has evolved, but in other ways has drastically changed with people relying on the amplif

thanks, bwaysinger, and you are right! They are two separate topics and I should not have combined them. It's my first post. I agree that legit singing can be found in today's shows and of course revivals of yesterday's shows. The range issue creeped in because they are related, at least in my mind. Singing in the pop style goes hand in hand with singing higher, for men. That pop belt sound only happens up top, so song writers set the tessitura a lot higher, as opposed to songs that have hig
re: What Actor Was So Good They Made You Cry?

Victoria Clark. 100 percent. I cry every time I listen to parts of LITP on my ipod. What a performance, and what a voice!

Also, Celia Keenan-Bolger in Speeling Bee will tear your heart out. That girl is one of the brightest stars on Broadway.

Legit singing on Broadway
 Aug 9 2006, 10:09:37 AM
I am keeping my fingers crossed that trend shifts to include more opportunities for legit singing. I'm not asking for Showboat or the like, just some more variety. As an audience member, I am a huge fan of all musical theater and its many styles. I would be hard pressed to find a show that I just plain didn't like. There are great performances and spectacular moments in even the worst shows. As a singer, I just long for more opportunites that showcase my voice type instead of trying to only
