re: NYC Suggestions

Jul 27, 2008 — 10:52:35 PM

In general, my advice to visitors is to get out of the "touristy" areas as much as possible. You'll see enough of Times Square while buying tickets, getting back and forth to your shows, etc. (I do second Top of the Rock, though. The view from there is STUNNING, especially if you go at night.) Try and do at least one museum--my personal favorite is the Museum of the City of New York, at 103rd and 5th. You'll love the Perform! exhibit, which chronicles theatre history in the city. (While you'r...

re: In The Heights seating question

I've seen the show twice--first from the second row in the orchestra, and then from orchestra row M. Loved the show both times, but seating-wise, I much preferred the latter...

Passing Strange Lyrics

May 29, 2008 — 10:36:10 PM

Okay, so I've seen (and loved) the show, and have been listening to the cast recording pretty much nonstop for the past few days. However, there are a few words that I just can't make out, and the lyrics don't seem to be online anywhere. Hopefully someone here can help. In Keys (Marianna), what is the lyric immediately following: She was kind of an acrobat Oh you were lucky to find a chair... I've listened to it over and over, but just can't seem to make out the next line. It sounds like "som...

re: Songs About Food or Drink

Some of these may be stretching it a bit, but... "Sposalizio" and "Fresno Beauties" - The Most Happy Fella "M&M's" - Violet "No More Candy" - She Loves Me "Sara Lee" - And the World Goes Round "Dry" and "Gin" - The Wild Party "All I Owe Ioway" - State Fair "Molasses to Rum" - 1776 "It Couldn't Please Me More" (the pineapple song) - Cabaret "Let's Have Lunch" - Sunset Blvd. And lots of songs from Little Shop, if we're counting people as "food" :)

re: 10 minute plays

Find a copy of this book: Take Ten: New 10-Minute Plays Edited by Eric Lane and Nina Shengold It is a actually a pretty good collection, with contributions by John Guare, Tony Kushner, Christopher Durang, David Mamet, and many others. There are 32 short plays in all.

re: Tommy costume help!

Apr 3, 2007 — 6:01:27 PM

"Illegal" is a bit strong--people copy from other productions all the time. That said, as a professional designer, I wouldn't be thrilled to learn that somebody had copied my work without giving proper credit. As far as reference materials go, if your costume designer can make it to New York, the Library at Lincoln Center is a great resource. They might also try looking to art and photography books for inspiration. Photos/video of the show you're working on aren't always the best way to go ab...

re: Lost Theatre History

Apr 3, 2007 — 4:26:37 PM

Regarding the first part of your question: If you are looking for information about a theatre that is still in operation, try contacting the theatre directly. Many of them keep detailed archives of past productions. Valley Forge Music Fair closed in the mid-1990s, but you could try contacting the Valley Forge Historical Society--chances are there were archives that ended up somewhere, and they might be able to help. I also found this link that might be of interest: http://www.lambertville-mus...

re: The Deceptive New GREY GARDENS Recording

Mar 31, 2007 — 3:48:46 PM

I'm listening to mine for the first time right now and discovering the same thing--many of the songs sound exactly as they do on the Off-Broadway recording. The new songs/cast members sound good, but if I'd known how much was the same I would have probably just waited and downloaded the new songs from iTunes, instead of buying the whole CD.
