I saw and heard about this too...

So true, Uniq.... My fiance gets treated like crap when he goes with my dad to the big and tall men's shop (Joey is 5'5", 150lbs). That's not right either. It just seems to me that all this nonsense about "plus" and "skinny" is wrong. MOST of the women in this country fall in the 8-16 category. Plus is considered 12 & up. This is wrong because it tells women of normal and average size that they are bigger than most, and therefore promotes an unhealthy obsession with being smaller than aver

Rathnait.... I don't think Curves has a website, but if you google "petite plus", a bunch of other sites will appear. They're not couture, but still, it might help. For info on Curves, New York, check out Catherine Schuller's website www.uniquelyme.com, I believe. She's FANTASTIC... The country's premire plus-sized model, organized the first major plus-sized fashion show during fashion week in NYC.

I wish I could take responsibility for my size. I run 6 miles a day and I lift weig

Rathnait.... I feel you there.... I'm 5'2". There IS a line of petite-plus couture out there.... It's put out by Curves, New York. But that's only 1 line. As for being overweight being someone's "fault".... Why does being overweight have to be such a bad thing and carry such a bad stigma? To quote "Pulp Fiction", 'It's unfortunate that what we find pleasing to the touch and what we find pleasing to the eye are so often different' (Or something along those lines.... Don't wanna get reame

OK, Namo.... I aggree with you there, but please understand that plus-sized people don't think it's trivial, and just because everyone knows it happens doesn't mean it shouldn't be addressed. The only way things change is if people start dealing with existing problems and stop letting them "blow over". As for my own personal feeling of being persecuted, it just seems to me that with the exception of one post I've made, the instant reaction of several people on this board has been to tear my p

I stand corrected.... Oscar NOMINATED.... Sorry, let me put the revolver to my head now.... God forbid I should make a mistake in my post. But my semantics aren't the issue here, and it trivializes the issue, but then, perhaps I'm not supposed to have an opinion. *sigh* It's amazing how a few people can make others feel bad for caring about something that they might not be interested in. And funny how when the topic is discrimination in any form toward Gay people, tons of gay advocates ju

Namo.... I meant she WORKS primarily in Hollywood and she's an Oscar Winner instead of a Tony Winner.... Mmmmmmkay? Damn, lets not get too mad about it. And I meant that they probably would have recognized Queen Latifah due to her Hollywood Star Status and not known who Marissa was, so they probably would have been less rude to Latifah. And it is true that unless they know who you are, they're going to be rude and snotty to you.... You said as much in your previous posts. The fact is that

Ummmmm..... I don't think that would be the best publicity to have. "No you can't shop here.... You're too fat." Yeah, I'd really LOVE to be known for having trouble finding designer duds for awards shows. I think the point is that it actually happened two years in a row, even after last year's debacle, and after winning the Tony, STILL these people are stuck so far up their own a**es that they have to be rude, ignorant, and prejudiced. It's sick, but unfortunately, true and accepted. I t
Acting Coaches in NYC?
 May 18 2004, 12:14:08 PM
Hey guys... Any ideas on superb acting coaches or classes in the city? I'm very interested in working with someone GREAT, and I wonder if you guys have any ideas. I'll be in the city in the fall to audit classes and make some decisions, but I don't really even know where to start. I've been looking at HB Studio, but if you know of any other programs or private coaches, I'd love to hear about it. THANX!

Oh, and by the way..... I just checked on AMDA's website.... 95% of their individual voice teachers have opera training or experience, and about 80% of their musical theater dept. has opera experience. Just a note I thought might be of interest. Like I said, I'm not an integrated program student, but I do understand the basic concept: Belting = bad, opera = good. :) Hope that helps some of you.

Well, I guess this will have to be one of the things I do in fact have to experience for myself. To answer your questions: No, I haven't been speaking with far previous alumni. the people I spoke with were not even AMDA alumni, but they WERE the people who are working currently in casting and choreography on Broadway, some Off-broadway, and several regional theaters. The AMDA alumni I spoke with from the integrated program did, in fact, say that there was not enough acting training, and that

*sigh* Alright... I've reviewed the previous thread, I've spoken with ppl from the Screen Actor's Guild and from Backstage magazine, I've called a few of my dad's old friends from his days as an actor in New York (most of them are casting directors and/or choreographers now)... I am researching to the best of my ability... So far, this is what I have found. While there are SOME people for whom the program did not work and who decided to leave and pursue other avenues, there are also SOME p

CJR.... That was the tread I read that made me worry, but I couldn't help but notice that almost every response talked about the Integrated program (i.e. belting techniques, minimal acting training, chorus line preparation, etc.). That is why I am specifically inquiring if anyone knows anything about the Studio program. Also, one thing that struck me as funny in that thread was the comment about the dorm rooms. THANK GOD that I will be living in my own place off campus. I'm too old for nast

Thanks for the input, Red... Unfortunately, if I had to sing for my life, I'd die a horrible death anyway. But I do know that the curriculums are VERY different... I don't want to make a wrong decision. My concern is that it would be like making a decision not to go to a school for Nursing because their pre-med program isn't tops. I feel like it would be irresponsible to make a decision based only on the musical theater aspect when I'm interested only

Hey guys, I'm really just feeling this out. I wouldn't want to make a huge mistake with my career. If ANYONE has an opinion or information for me about the Studio program, please let me know. I am interested in classical acting and Film/television work. It has always been my dream to work both on the stage and in front of a camera. I'd really like to know if there is something important I should know. Things like "SCAMDA" are really scaring me, and I'm beginning to re-think my decision to
Moving to NYC in the spring!

I'm a 23 year old soon-to-be full time student (AGAIN!) I have been accepted to AMDA's Studio program (that's "straight" theater, not musical) and I've been reading some horrible things about the integrated program. I've already put down my deposit and I have already heard back from them about my financial aid. I have decided to go, but I'd like to know if anyone has anything to say about the Studio Program. From what I understand, the integrated program is frowned upon in this particular fo
