HADESTOWN will return on September 2

May 25, 2021 — 12:33:29 AM

That was a #tbt (throw back Thursday) pic from the first Broadway rehearsal 2 years ago. I wouldn’t take that as having anything to do with today’s news.

Color-blind and gender-blind casting

joevitus said: Wrong."You need to stretch your imagination a bit if you can suspend disbelief for Mame and Vera to sing Bosom Buddies but you can’t suspend if it one of them is Black because of the era Your arguments using Show Boat are straw man because Show Boat is specifically written ABOUT race and miscegenation. And you know this. Don’t pretend to be dense. There is a difference in racially blind casting and racially conscious casting.

Color-blind and gender-blind casting

The level of passive racism in this thread should be astounding but I’m sadly not surprised. Clearly non BIPOCs saying “A Black Billy reenforces racial stereotypes” or more absurdly “miscegenation laws hadn’t been repealed” or worst of all “a Black Jenna changes what Waitress is about.” What you’re saying is that a Black Billy Bigelow or Jenna made you uncomfortable because it made you look outside of your own bubble, or it made you think about other people existing in your bubble. You’re fin...

Arsenic and Old Lace as a musical

Aug 18, 2019 — 8:36:23 AM

Richard Rodgers attempted it as a vehicle for Merman and Martin but couldn’t make it work. I’m not exactly sure where the play “sings.” It requires such a specific pace for the style of comedy that rewriting it as a musical seems like a great way to suck the air right out of it. However a first rate revival of it, perhaps directed by Jerry Zaks, could be super fun

Questions about Lombardo's "Looped"

Aug 13, 2019 — 9:20:46 PM

It wasn’t a great play and the male roles were VERY underwritten. However- Valerie Harper was fantastic as Bankhead. She absolutely inhabited the character. I still hold the end of the first act as a favorite piece of stagecraft as Tallulah tells of her failure in a regional production of A Streetcar Named Desire and when she begins reciting Blanche’s lines and exiting the studio, the lights came up behind the set revealing it to be a scrim with shadows of the Streetcar set upstage. One remar...

Rocky Horror Show Revival (2000)

Aug 11, 2019 — 11:48:05 PM

Yes, the entire score was re-orchestrated and vocal parts rearranged, however when you license the show you are given lead sheets instead of full charts so there is no “set” orchestration to the show. Every version is different. If you listen to a couple of cast recordings you will immediately notice the differences.

OlBlueEyes said: "There wouldn’t be a need for bootlegs if Broadway would stop living in the last century. In general, people no longer have to be at the right place at the right time to see films, television shows and live concerts. Not long after first release, films and TV shows can be streamed right to your home. And there is fantastic money in it, as you know if you follow Netflix. An increasing number of live concerts are being recorded and made available for later viewing. Even subscrip...

American Beauty as a Play.

standingovation79 said: "people adore Shakespeare plays where characters kill everybody and bake them in pies for their enemies to eat. Art is not about being the morality police. Lester Burnham is a fascinating character. His imperfections are what attracts people." let’s be real here. People love Shakespeare but in the oft produced canon how many Titus’s are you actually seeing? Not the play to use as a sticking post. I agree Spacey’s involvement in the film is moot and you are correct the ...

Do They ID People at Bars on Broadway?

Aug 12, 2015 — 1:22:16 AM

As a former Broadway Bar Manager for several years I can tell you that generally you'll be carded based on 1: your look. If you look under 30 and appear at all nervous, anxious, or overeager you'll probably be carded. 2: The show. A show like Hedwig, Mormon, Wicked or any show that brings in a lot of school groups or younger audiences is more likely to card. And 3: Your order. You look younger than 25 and you order a shot OR a fruity complicated cocktail that you're better off ordering at a c...

Hamilton ticket prices-seriously?

Jun 10, 2015 — 1:46:55 AM

Ok, I've only ever responded on boards in an informational capacity but this nonsense is too much. Pinto, you have proven yourself time and time again to be uneducated and misinformed when it comes to the business of Broadway. I'll bypass the Living on Love and An American in Paris conversations and the bi-phobic drivle of the past and get onto the racist and bigoted absurdity of the day. 1: Most people not in an upper income bracket have a hard time going to Broadway shows without lotteries,...
