The Official Passing Strange Love Thread!
 Jul 20 2008, 02:53:23 AM
I wish they'd consider IMAX. I was just telling some friends how I wished all movie musicals played in IMAXs, if only for the sound quality. (Though, guh, Sweeney would have LOOKED fabulous in one.)

I had no idea they changed the show to reference the online episodes, I do find that a bit odd. But then again, they've changed the last 1/3 of the show to reflect their journey to Broadway now, so that's expected. Overall though, the main story is very easy to relate to, I'd think. And the Broadway and [tos] references shouldn't mess with your enjoyment of the show itself. But regardless, I suppose I can KIND of agree with the "one big inside joke".

And I too hope it succeeds. It cer

Since this is a Passing Strange thread I won't go on about my love for [title of show] but that Glory Days comparison hurts. I looooathe that show, it didn't make any sense. This show however? makes complete sense and it's very much meant to do what they did for themselves - gives you a positive outlook when trying to reach your dreams. (And at least the 4 friends in [tos] make sense.) I think this R_SPANG (not familiar with ATC, someone explain?) did indeed miss the point and paid attention to

verynewyorkcurious... where do you make your ringtones at? The place I used to make one of mine really lowers the volume, so whenever my cell is even on its loudest volume option, I still don't hear it most of the time.

Agreed about it having the best score.

Hopefully this doesn't offend anyone - it shouldn't IMO - but I very much see Passing Strange as the new Hedwig. Not only because of the rock show feel but there's the narrated life journey. I'm not saying it's Hedwig 2 or anything like that, PS is very much its own show. But I just mean that I think a lot of people who appreciate a good score when they hear it, specifically a modern/rock one, would find this to their liking. I believe that many of

Well, I checked right at midnight and no result for me, but I bet it was up just 5 seconds later. lol Just my luck.
But regardless, yaaay!

Downloading now and immediately updating my iPod so that I can listen to this on my way to the store [to pick up the Absolutely Fabulous complete collection]. This Tuesday will be EXCELLENT. :)

I have to say, I am pretty hesitant about 'modern' musicals - I just can't get into the music. Jason Robert Brown is brilliant but it takes me such a long time to finally enjoy his music. But with Passing Strange... I don't know, I think they fully grabbed hold of theatre and didn't let it go while creating this "rock" show. Does anyone understand/follow? I couldn't figure out for so long what about this musical had drawn me in, and about 24 hours ago it came to me; I feel like this is another H

"Go with PlayStation. It's definitely the way to go."

Do you say that because of the price? I'm considering getting one. I have an HD tv but couldn't afford a Blu-player or PS3, and this up-conversion dvd player I have is pretty fantastic considering the $50 price. So I'm on the fence, regardless.

best12bars... (nice username btw, meant to say that originally) heh, I understand you for not watching tv lately. But I do have to say, there are a couple shows that are well worth tuning in for. Unfortunately, they are usually in danger of cancellation first season or briefly after. Luckily for Pushing Daisies, ABC gave it a LOT of promotion and the fairytale love story helps regular television viewers get hooked in. Otherwise, it's really too quirky and witty for most (which is usually an automatic death sentence for a show) and did indeed lose some viewers because of it. Swoosie Kurtz and Ellen Green are also on the show. :) The creator, Bryan Fuller (Wonderfalls, Dead Like Me), is a huge Broadway fan.
Here is a neat series preview if you are curious about the story: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DLvMGGnLbQw

But yes, I do indeed understand your departure from Primtime - I'd be tempted to do the same because of ridiculous cancellations of fantastic shows like Firefly, Arrested Development and Wonderfalls. But I'm rather attached to The Office, Friday Night Lights and Pushing Daisies. :) And now Lost is getting good again!

Anyway -- back to Company!!

Nothing new there, indeed. (re: Sondheim = brilliant) It is indeed a very vague show but I also find it rather simplistic. I mean, we know the basics and that's all we really need to know. And as for the whole party deal, I figured as much that most of them do not know each other. Maybe they've been introduced on past occasions briefly, but mostly, they only have Bobby in common and are always there for him regardless of this gathering being otherwise unfamiliar and possibly uncomfortable for them. And I agree, I don't know if all of the best drama arises from that, but it's definitely possible if you have the right kinds of people in the room. And Bobby knows all kinds, so it's only a matter of time!

BrodyFosse123... I didn't say everyone here didn't know that. But obviously this person who made the original post was not familiar with the show because most people ALSO know Raul was on the show - and they said they'd love to see him on tv what with his acting abilities. I know everyone who follows Kristin knows she is on the show. And pardon my spelling mistake, please, I am a fan of two other KristEn's, so it is simply a typo that I don't notice.

Way to be harsh, though...

best12bars...what a fabulous post! Nicely written and glad to hear you enjoyed it. :)

Btw, if you go on YouTube and search for Raul Esaprza and/or Pushing Daisies, you can see his guest spots on that show. He works so well with the the atmosphere created, not to mention the quirkiness. :)

Okay, I've actually gone ahead and found a clip joining only his and Kristen Chenoweth's scenes, as they are a potential couple fans like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zJ126Ct8gbI
(Kristen's a regular on the show.)

[i]but it was added because many people felt that Bobby was likely gay, and Sondheim and Furth wanted to assert that he's not.[/i]

That seems a little ridiculous to me. I definitely don't mind the scene. And I don't feel it is any more random than other things that were discussed.

lots of replies....

McFan2 -- it's not about liking the music. She could have simply said that and we wouldn't have said a word back to her because we know tastes differ. But claiming a musical would be better sans music is just not a point one musical theatre fan makes. It doesn't make any sense. Someone could HATE every single song and I could care less, as I'm sure others wouldn't care either.

wickedrentq -- as I said, I am attached to Sondheim immediately so I do personally

The main thing I don't understand is how any respectable musical theatre fan could say a musical would be better without [most of] the music.

First of all, if you REALLY want to look at it that way - all musicals can be made into something sans music. But they are in fact musicals, so this shouldn't even be mentioned. A musical can be horribly scored, but one should never try to suggest a musical would be better without the music. It would then not be a musical. So, it's moot. Just don'

Caroline - I don't know. Certainly not me. When they have people like Fergie performing on it, how could one care?

But if we really were to look at this category appropriately, there is no way Spring Awakening would have came out with the win. Plain and simple.

Also, when someone is simply pointing out a great [studio] production of Sondheim's being snubbed - why are they all of a sudden [Sondheim] elitists? I can respect people who love Spring Awakening, I can. To each their o
