HAIR: The Story of a Show That Defined a Generation

Seeing the recent revival made me wonder if we can still have a Broadway show that can "define a generation"

Tweeting during shows

Really great blog post by emerging playwright Kimberly Lew about tweeting and texting in the theater, a topic I know is hotly discussed and debated on these boards.

Julie Taymor's remarks at the TCG conference in LA

Taymor was in LA last weekend for the TCG conference and made some interesting comments on her experience with Spider-Man. Its pretty clear that she's still not ready to take any responsibility for what's happened with the show. I know its kind of a beaten to death topic on these boards but I found her aversion to the focus groups they used during previews pretty insightful into her perspective on this.

South Park and Musicals

Last week I started a thread about Musical moments from the Simpsons. Since Book of Mormon looks like its going to win a bunch of Tonys come Sunday I thought it would be fun to talk about South Park's Musical Theater moments.

Here are my top 5 faves:

Any others?

Musical Theater and the Simpsons

haha so true! Jon Lovitz is hysterical in that as well.

I was going more for direct parodies of musicals here, perhaps I should do another post with the best musical moments in general!

Musical Theater and the Simpsons

With everything that's been happening with Book of Mormon, its made me think a lot about how shows like South Park, Family Guy and before them the Simpsons have always played around with Musical Theater.

Here are my fave musical theater simpsons moments:

Any others people are fond of that I missed?

Best Actor and Actress

I was thinking about the Tony noms yesterday, and I wondered to myself in all these awards why we separate the performance categories by actor and actress...

Show Doctors...bad medicine?

I think Sister Act made the right call by actually hiring Jerry Zaks as the new director instead of just bringing him on as a consultant. It also seems from the Times article that the original bookwriter(s) were supportive of Douglas Carter Beane's input.

As far as the writers/directors needing an outside perspective...I think the show doctor issue is another example of Producers outsourcing responsibilities they once took on themselves due to a lack of knowledge, time or both. Ideall

Show Doctors...bad medicine?

I was intrigued by Patrick Healy's recent NY times article on this subject...so Today on the Crazytown Blog I discuss the wisdom of hiring a show-doctor to fix a problem show.

Composer Ryan Scott Oliver weighs in with his two cents as well!

Why so few female writers and directors on Broadway?

Hoping for a discussion about this issue a little more nuanced than that lol.

For example, there were no new plays by female writers on Broadway this season.

Why so few female writers and directors on Broadway?

There are certainly some great and prominent ones but this season the ratio of men to women in those jobs is particularly bad...especially on the writing side of things.

Stephen King & John Mellencamp's GHOST BROTHERS OF DARKLAND COUNTY - HOLY C

I think its totally odd that he's collaborating with Mellencamp based on Mellencamp's body of work.
But as you'll see in my blog post about it I try to keep an open mind.
