Good Vibrations is a rip-off

Posted: 12/31/04 at 1:16pmJust saw Good Vibrations. What a rip off. I saw a reading of a show a couple of years ago called "Surf's Up". This was a lot more fun than Good Vibrations and they used songs by different artists from the 60's. It was really cleaver how they used the songs with the script. Good Vibrations is a bad rip off of Surf's Up. The producer's should be ashamed of themselves. I was hoping that Good Vibrations was really Surf's Up with a name change. I would love to see the entire show of Surf's Up.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 1:23pmdid you like Surf's Up? I couldn't really tell. As for GV being a rip off, its not if you know what you're expecting. If you want a show with a great story, see Little Women. GV is just mindless fun.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 1:26pmYes I liked nSurf's up alot. It was both funny and touching. I also loved the songs. The best part was not knowing what songs they would use since they didn't stick to one artist. When a soing began you could hear the audience say I remember that song or I love that song. It was fun. I wish I could see the entire show.

Tommy,
I attended the last dress rehearsal for this show and wrote about my dislike for it. the shill son this borad nearly ate me alive. I was just merely trying to save everyone their hard earned money.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 1:33pmGood Vibrations doesn't belong on Broadway. It should be presented for free at Six Flags Great Adventure. As far as the shill, it is sad that the show needs a shill on here.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 1:36pmwhy can't they bring that hot movie "back to the beach" to bway haha... we can all sing that "skye" number in our seats.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 1:36pmThis is true but half way thru the show you might end up giving back the hotdog and the coke.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 1:40pmMy parents loved the beach movies. they made me watch all of them over and over agin. I actually fell in love with annette. Surf's up was in a way like back to the beach because it was about a couple returning to the beach after 40 years. Most of the show is a flashback.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 1:54pmWell GOOD VIBRATIONS has to be better than CAROLINE, right? I mean they did kick that show out for this one.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 1:56pmGood Vibrations could have been wonderful. If they had a good script. If they had some real laughs and if they treated the music with the respect it deserved. Some of the cast couldn't even hit the high notes. They used songs that had absolutely no reason to be sung. It looked like hey this is a good place to sing this song.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 2:05pmCan you articulate what it is about Good Vibrations that you find so appalling? I saw it yesterday and enjoyed it much more than I thought I would. First off, who doesn't love two and a half hours of the Beach Boys? Okay, so the story is pretty stupid and the ending is kind of cheap, but I don't think that makes it a rip off. The people on that stage are working really hard and are doing a great job. There are some gorgeous voices and great dancers in the show and they all seem to be having a great time, which is the best thing about it -- it's a great big fun time! It's not meant to be controversial or stirring or anything like that -- it's just supposed to be fun! No one wants it to be this life altering musical that will wins Pulitzers and be remembered for the rest of time as the best musical ever.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 2:09pmWhen I said it was a rip off I was referring to the fact that they stole so much from the show Surf's Up. They didn't do the Beach Boys proud. They added nothing to the songs. They didn't have the right feel. The voices were all wrong. They couldn't hit the high notes. If you are a Beach Boys fan then you will hate it.

I know people are thinking I'm a shill because I'm speaking positively about this show, despite the fact that I think it needs a lot of work.
But, I AM a huge Beach Boys fan, I'm familiar with all periods of their work, and I was really impressed by both the arrangements of the songs and the performances of the songs. Not so much their placement, or the story surrounding them. The problem is that they are vocally difficult. When I saw the second preview, they sounded pretty great, but there were a few times there were some struggles, and I think it's only going to get worse as cold season continues. But, still, as someone VERY familiar with Beach Boys music, they did a good job with the arranging and the singing, and the main problem that will, or may have already, arise will be when it gets to be too much for the voices singing it.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 2:18pmI didn't think the songs had very much to do with the story. did u? It was like hey were in a car let's sing a car song. hey were on the beach let's sing a beach song.

Posted: 12/31/04 at 2:21pmI didn't have any problems with the songs. Just the fact that this is a amusemaent park quality show disguising itself as a broadway musical.
