It was hilarious. Profanity and sexual gestures galore, with a few references to pedophilia of course. They had two pandas grab the kids as they were eliminated, which I don't remember when I saw it at the opening. There was a really funny scene where the kids are revealed in sexual positions with the pandas, it was hysterical. If they do this again I suggest people catch it! Worth every penny!!!

I agree it was wonderful! I almost didn't go, couldn't imagine it could be that different and that worth it to def pay full price to see it, but I finally decided to like 2 hours before the show, got a second row dead center seat and I'm so happy I went. Soo many line changes and new jokes and references and such, and interesting movements and it was great.

However...

I gotta admit I was a teeny bit disturbed...see my name is Amanda and I have quite a few friends who call me Amanda Panda and a couple who even just call me Panda. So yeah...those Pandas...weird.

Ok, I don't want to review the whole thing and there were so many different things tonight than normal, too many to name.
The songs were mainly the same, a few lyric changes here and there.
Many of the words were the same, but with different sentences and used in VERY inappropriate ways.
Lots of sexual innuendo stuff, lots of physical comedy, especially with the pandas.
Lots of profanity. Lots.
The understudies were all there watching, they were cracking up and commenting the entire time.
It was a lot of fun and I'm glad I got to see it!

Why Pandas???----Cause Life is Pand(a)monium!!!
Did you realize that the 2 Pandas were David Stone who is producer of Spelling Bee and Wicked---And Carol Roth--Artistic Director of Second Stage where Spelling Bee began Off-Broadway!!! She is also a current producer.

Yes, that's right, they made their first appearance during Pandemonium.

i wish i could have gone. glad everyone had fun.
"At the opening night party, they had clowns on stilts, jugglers, a chocolate fountain, popcorn, hot dogs. [My son] looked at me like I had been holding back. Like, 'This is what you do?' I had to tell him, 'No, no, darling. Opening nights don't usually look like this.' It's usually a dark bar with a bottle of vodka." ?Chitty Chitty Bang Bang's Jan Maxwell plus i proudly share the title of the shortest member over the age of 10 with wickedrentq!

Will someone tell me how they found spellers whose last names were Bird, Long, and Wood?--you can just imagine the field day Vice Principal Panch and Ms. Perreti had with them.
Either the words or the unhelpful sentences had all sorts of sexual overtones.
You don't even want to know about Barfee's magic foot. He had more to contend with than a rare mucus membrane disorder

I thought it was so funny when the volunteer whose last name was Bird went up to spell and Lisa said "Ms. Bird likes one in the hand and two in the bush!"

re: Waiting for Spelling Bee review tonight!

I just want to say how much I love and appreciate this cast. They have been putting in a lot of over time between creating the brilliantly satirical interpretive dance for The Broadway Katrina benefit and last night's R rated Bee version.

re: Waiting for Spelling Bee review tonight!

No--I was referring to the extra amount of work to create the new version and rehearsal time needed.

re: Waiting for Spelling Bee review tonight!

I never implied it was a benefit. The interpretive dance was for The Katrina benefit. The Spelling Bee cast like so many of the other generous and wonderful broadway stars spent all last Sunday at signing tables, and the auction to raise money for Broadway Cares and then did matinee and evening performances and then did The benefit for katrina . Their combined efforts raised hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I was acknowledging how much extra creative effort and rehearsal time this cast puts in to do something unique.

I understand B.B. I'm sorry if I was unclear. There is, however an Actor's Fund Benefit scheduled for Spelling Bee's Oct. 23rd performance. It is not the R rated version. There should be many actors in the audience so it should be an interesting evening.
