Poor Carolee Carmello...

Posted: 1/28/06 at 6:40pmI just had to start a thread for Carolee. Can this woman catch a freaking break? She is supposed to be wonderful in Lestat, and probably had a chance at the Tony...Will someone write a great lead for her already?

Posted: 1/28/06 at 6:41pmHAD? Has she been fired? Has the show officially announced it's not coming in?

Well, many say it won't be coming in. I can't see them fixing those problems that quickly, and getting WB's and John's approval.

She had a great lead already in Parade.
What is her husband up to?

Posted: 1/28/06 at 6:50pmShe did have a great lead in Parade, but she needs a chance at a commercial show. She has so much star potential.

Posted: 1/28/06 at 8:01pmDarling, I of all people, am fully aware of Carolee's credits. WHile she has had a great career, she has mostly done replacement work. She was robbed of a Tony for Parade, and needs another new show to nab her the prize. That's all I'm saying. Didn't ask to be belittled.

Posted: 1/28/06 at 8:06pmI'm pretty sure Lestat is going to at least preview on Broadway. The questions lie in who is going to be at the helm. So far, the closing San Francisco cast has remained intact, so Carmello's still onboard.

I think many, many actresses would kill to have the career she's had thus far. I think she's caught plenty of "breaks."
As for Lestat, even if it did open here, I doubt she'd have any chance at a Tony whatsoever considering she'd be up against Lupone, LaChanze, Freidman, and now Chita Rivera.

I think you guys are taking Bobby's comments out of context.
I think Bobby is asking when will Carolee get her big STAR turn, and get the big success and fame she deserves. Yes, we know she has had some great breaks. But Bobby and others want Carolee to have a wonderul star turn - a la Victoria Clark in Piazza. We all knew how wonderful Vicki was, but Piazza really put her out there.

I think what everyone is talking about is two little phrases... "Poor Carolee Carmello" and "Can't Catch A Break"
Look, a big star role and a a Tony award are not a "break". If you are living on Ramen noodles and restaurant gift certificates and you land a paying theatre job, that is a break. Carolee doesn't need a break or anyone's pity. She is working, feeding her kids, has a cool husband, etc. etc. etc.
I DO agree, however, that the woman should have a star turn. But I will not pity her or say "Poor Carolee" before she gets that star turn, just as I never would have said "Poor Vicki Clark", pre Piazza.

Thanks ljay. You summed it up better than I could.
Carolee's work means a lot to me. She is my favorite performer, as many of you well know. I have seen her work her ass off time and time again, getting attention yes, but not getting the kind of exposure she deserves. By break, I just meant the next level. She deserves to go to another level, to star turns in new shows ON Broadway. Her big role in Parade, while great, was not in a commercial show. Sure, she's not starving, but I think she deserves more than being the replacement girl. I just think it is sad that she is in such a troubled show, and is the best thing about it. She deserves to be in high quality work, worthy of her talent. I know that she will rise above this, but by "poor Carolee" I simply meant that it sucks (pardon the pun) that she is in such a troubled and tense show.
If Lestat does come to NYC, I worry that a harsh critical reception will hurt Carolee's Tony chances.
So yes, she's had many breaks, but I don't she has had THE break that will assure her star roles for the rest of her career. I think there are tons of vetran actresses that haven't had THE break that catapults them into the same casting category as Buckley, Lupone, and Peters.
I didn't mean to offend anyone, just passionate about my favorite performer and concerned about her current situation.
Hope everyone is having a great Saturday night.

Just saw her again tonight in Lestat. She's fantastic in her role, and her voice just resonates throughout the theater. She garnered the most applause, and deserved it.
The role is too small for her talents. She's on stage in act one for about 30 minutes, then disappears until the very end of the show. I wanted more of her Gabrielle! Are you in NYC, bobbybubby? If so, don't miss the chance to see her singing "Crimson Kiss" in this show. It's a beautiful song.

Beggars can't be choosers. Welcome to a career in the theatre. There are good shows, bad shows, successes, failures. It's all a part of the business. Carolee is a fine performer and she deserves all the success she has had and I don't doubt that she'll continue to work consistently for as long as she chooses to. You can't pick and choose whether your cast in a "commercial" show, and "star turn" is a relative term. It sounds to me like you just want her to win a Tony Award. A Tony is not the definition of success. Carolee is talented and lucky, and she's well known and respected in the industry. If this is the definition of someone who needs to "catch a freaking break" I'd hate to see where that puts the tons of up and coming talented performers who have yet to receive their first paying gig.

Well, Patti Lupone played Fantine and didn't seem to mind.
