I too enjoyed Wicked when it first opened. I listened to the CD and saw the show on Broadway on one of my trips to New York. All in all, I thought it was a fun night at the theater, nowehere near perfect, but just entertaining. I enjoyed the spectacle and the enormous scope, as well as the mostly above-average Stephen Schwartz score. I did think, however that the show's book was a mess.
When I saw Wicked, I was the only person I knew who was even aware of the show. A few months after I came back though, the PHENOMENON set in. Soon, it was the only show people talked about. People, who had never seen or even talked about a Broadway show in their life were now walking down the halls talking about Wicked, or Idina Menzel. Even my schools top choir chose to do a Wicked medley for the spring concert.
The reason I can no longer tolerate Wicked is the OBSESSION! It's one thing to be fanatical, but to some extent the craze has gotten out of control. It isn't just the fact that people now act like Broadway connoisseurs but at the same time say, "Wicked is the best show EV-AR!" It's also the obnoxious, sometimes dangerous behavior at the stage door, or the rude audiences that now fill the Gershwin nightly.
I don't think I have ever seen another show with an obsession quite this intense, not even Rent or Phantom.
