I am the King of commenting about off-topic, but I do not find this off-topic at all......

Not off topic, I'm not any help with this. You may want to change the title to what the thread is about that way people will open it. Vague thread titles seem to turn some people off (though I get curious and look re: This may be off topic but.............).

Go read the 'best backstage attendant?' thread -- it gives info on how to become a stagedoorman.

I`d rather be like an Usher or the guy who sales the show`s memorobilia in the lobby. (I think I may be to young for Stage door attendant)

Thanks!

You need to join the union to be an usher and it costs A LOT of money to join.

And you basically need to know the show's producers to sell merchandise.

I suggest you apply at one of the Broadway merchandise stores in the area. That way you'll at least be close to a theatre. Updated On: 6/18/06 at 11:21 PM

Based on your writings and the questions you've asked I would concur that you are probably too young to be a stagedoorman. (sorry if that offends you)

As for selling merch, I know Max Merchandising does a lot of the shows.... I think Theatre Stuff Inc does as well. Check on Playbill.com under 'job listings' for jobs like that as well as concessions.

And yes, to be an usher you need to join the union and pay dues and all that jazz.

It is not hard at all to get a service job at a bway theatre. E-mail me, i will tell you where to go. There are usher jobs always on Playbill.com and they always need bartenders. The union dues are not that expensive and they are worth it if you want something long-term. The thing you will notice about these employees (minus the Disney merchandise nuts) they are not stalkers and most could care less about being on a first name basis with the casts.

Ummmm...no, it isn't THAT easy to get a job at a Broadway Theatre. To be an usher...you have to pretty much know someone at the theatre you want to work. Then you have to cough up $350 to join the union, and then there are the dues you pay (I believe they are quarterly, but they could be bi-annually, I'm not sure) and those dues are in the $77-95 range each period. Your best bet is to become an usher sub..but you have to join the union to get on the list. Be warned, to be a permanent usher (and not a sub) they require a big commitment (all 8 shows or a minimum of 6).

To sell merchandise you don't have to know the producer of the show. The merchandise sales are handled by outside contractors. You just need to get in touch with one of them to see if they are hiring. Most of the merchandise vendors work for a variety of shows, so you'll definitely see more shows this way. Ushers, unless only a sub, can only work at their house if there is a show. Not sure about bartenders...I think they are part of the particular house at some venues and contracted out at others.
