Let me just say that first off, I am a huge fan of John's work in SPRING AWAKENING and think he deserves the Tony.
But, I think that starting this thread was a very bad idea.
Expect for a lot of loud mouths to start destroying SPRING AWAKENING and tearing apart Gallagher's performance.

After seeing performances by the other sure-fire nominees, John McMartin, Jason Danieley, John Cullum, and Bobby Stieggart, Gallagher doesn't have a snowball's shot in hell of winning, as talented as he as and as much of a fan I am of his.
The competition is just too strong and there are too many great performances. Hell, I'd call Stieggart the front-runner, IMO.
It's well known that I didn't like Spring Awakening, but even I'll admit that Gallagher was the best of the bunch. A nomination is definitely expected, but it's just too strong this year...

Well, he has a 20% chance of winning the Tony.
But I don't think he'll win. I think McMartin will take it.

Posted: 4/25/07 at 11:06pmHe has such "presence". Not "presents". Yes, he did a great job and I really like the show. But as yankee said, the competition is just TOO strong.

It is sad that Marry Well and leading Choose to be Happy takes out the full extent of Gallagher's numbers. I say this as a fan of both who enjoyed both, but put the impressions they made in perspective.
Many have seen both. In everything spoken of Spring Awakening, he is always highlighted first as one of the finest performances on the stage. McMartin is overshadowed in his own show, legendary or not. I DO want him to be first in line next year to take the forefront as Lifetime Achievement!

I got his "Award" right here.
I hope he gets a nom, don't see a win, but I have been wrong before.

Posted: 4/25/07 at 11:14pmMcMartins performance is fine, but it is really not very special. Gallaghers performance is in my opinion a very special performance. McMartin is perfect in the role, but I think he could be easily replaced with the same success.

Posted: 4/25/07 at 11:18pmBut... McMartin didn't DO anything in Grey Gardens. I liked the show, but how could you possibly compare his performance to John Gallagher's? Please, enlighten me.

Posted: 4/25/07 at 11:20pmMcMartin is a legend who has been nominated five times. That's why people are predicting him to win, because of his impressive body of work. I'm not saying it's right, but it's happened before.

Posted: 4/25/07 at 11:21pmI agree 100%!!!!! McMatin should just not be honored for an average performance when there is a young actor giving such a stong one a block over. Updated On: 4/25/07 at 11:21 PM

I agree with Wizard. It has happened before and there is a very high chance it will happen this year. I will be happy for McMartin having his prior experience acknowledged. But there is a category for that already, it isn't fair that someone who put in a better performance should be looked over.
As for what he does, he plays an excellent scene with Big Edie in the first act that is great and shows the intensity this man still has in his acting. He puts in a large effort for a man of his age and it is fantastic to watch. I'd just argue that the impression he leaves is not as strong as some of the other competitors.

But, to play devil's advocate, his material isn't as strong as Gallagher's. Gallagher is one of the three leads of SA, while McMartin isn't a lead in GG. He does good work as he always does, but he never gets a cahnce to shine in the first act or the second act. The show is all about Edie and Edith, not The Major or Peale. So, it is harder for him to make an impression.

I beg to differ. Your argument implies that those with the biggest roles to show off their talent are automatically the best.
Look back two years in the Supporting Actress in a Play category. Two excellent performances from both Heather Goldenhersh and Adrienne Lennox. One on stage for the majority of the play, the other only a mere 10 minutes or so. The award went to the one who made the bigger impression and pulled off a single flawless scene that blew many people away.

Well though, at the same time, small part does not = forgetable performance. Adriane Lenox in Doubt, anyone?
Edit: Damn, C beat me to it.

Just because McMartin has been snubbed in the past doesn't mean he will win for his not so large role in Grey Gardens. Too many people are focusing on his previous work.
