When I listen to the spoken word portions of the cast album, I can understand some of the criticisms of John's performance--it sounds kinda affected and obvious there--but watching him on stage was a whole 'nother matter. It's one of the most riveting performances I've seen in a long, long time.
Only other potential nominee I've seen is McMartin and it's such a nothing part... whether John G wins or not, I hope the Tonys don't turn into the Oscars and start awarding on careers rather than merit.
Also hoping "Spring" gets the big award...since while the second act of "Grey Gardens" was amazing, the simple fact is that it is only half a great show.

Posted: 4/27/07 at 10:51amI think David Pittu has this one in a very weak category this year! His Brecht is one of the best parts of LOVEMUSIK.

Posted: 4/27/07 at 11:18amI agree ... Pittu is wonderful in LoveMusik. Personally, I think the race is between him and Edward Hibbert, who gave the best performance in Curtains. Everyone keeps mentioning Jason Danielley, but I found him kind of bland. I don't think SA will get any acting awards.

Now that John McMartin's not nominated, I'd say a 60% shot or so.
Pittu could take it, though.

So glad McMartin wasn't nominated. I wish Bobby Steggart had been nominated instead of John Cullum for 110, but what can ya do. I don't think Cullum will win either.
I haven't seen LoveMusik yet (I'm seeing it tomorrow) so unless Pittu is doing really great work (which it sounds like he is) Gallagher has it in the bag. Oh, and Chritian Borle was good I thought, but didn't make as much of an impression as Gallagher.

After seeing performances by the other sure-fire nominees, John McMartin, Jason Danieley, John Cullum, and Bobby Stieggart, Gallagher doesn't have a snowball's shot in hell of winning, as talented as he as and as much of a fan I am of his.
I would be willing to bet money on the fact that Danieley will win the Tony this year.
McMartin - Not Nominated
Danieley - Not Nominated
Steggert - Not Nominated (sadly)
Does Noah Racey even have a chance of getting a nomination?

Edward Hibbert gave the most memorable performance.

Cullum will perhaps get a few sentimental votes, but 110 IN THE SHADE will be gone by mid-summer, and really, Cullum has had his time in the sun (more than once). David Pittu's show will be gone by the end of June, and the only raves that his show have received were for Cerveris and Murphy's performances.
With the way that the Broadway community has embraced SPRING AWAKENING, this one will be a no-brainer for the Tony voters. Inaugurate a newbie for his breakthrough performance in the season's most buzzed about musical. Gallagher has it in the bag.

Jonathan B. Wright is fabulous. He will definitely do well later in his career.

As I am unfamiliar with the performances in SA, what makes JGJ the more engaging actor than J.Groff?
People say he gives the better performance, and with all this "Yay John Gallagher Jr! He deserves the nom! Jonathan Groff for leading actor?! WTF?!" no one really states the details on his (JGJ's) performance.
Elaborate, please!

Broomstick, I don't get either performance to tell you the truth.
I'd hope Pittu or Cullum wins.
I don't care when their shows close.
Give the award to who actually deserves it, regardless of how long their show plans to run.

Posted: 5/18/07 at 12:33amFor one thing Gallagher's part is way more interesting. His character and the way played it, in my opinion, are much more real and there's WAY more conflict (especially internal) in the role. I thought Groff was decent, if unspectacular. Most of his material in the show isn't too stand out (except maybe "Totally F*****") and he doesn't do that much to heighten it. That said I'm glad he was nominated because Spring Awakening is a great show and it would have been a shame to have neither the lead actor or actress nominated. I don't think he should win, but he wasn't as bad as many people say he is.

Gallagher is the only one who reaches the so-called teenage angst that the production was aiming for (excuse the preposition).
Groff, to me, came off as the good and bad angel sitting on Moritz's shoulder. He did fine in an unremarkable role.

I agree 5000%, BSO.
Actually, I think that Gallagher deserves the award. I would vote for him, and I hope he wins.

I guess I was wrong, I just assumed it was like, the unconventionally attractive but still hot one was the better actor and the cute adorable one with the "awww" factor was the hit-or-miss.
Now I see it. Everyone always loves the angst-ridden one.
I'm being sarcastic. Sort of. But what can you expect from the majority of theatre-lovers on this board?
If he has that believable and natural quality in his performance than more power to him. That's the kind of acting I want to see.

I understand that kind of cynicism, but I think there's a little more to it with John Gallagher Jr. (vs Jonathan Groff) in this show.
Groff's role has less room to be impressive. It could have been the best role to act, if the creative team had ever settled on who the character is and what his behaviors and actions actually meant. But that's the most muddled part of the entire show, and Groff's natural pleasantness was not enough to rise above it.
My favorite performances in the show were from those who went a bit overexaggerated, honestly. Jonathan B. Wright and his hamminess, and John Gallagher Jr. and his awkward body language and sad sweetness. I could see where it would be deemed over the top, but I think the show is a little more ridiculous than it wants to believe, and JGJ is the best because he strikes the balance between that and the rest of the show's earnestness.

I think John Gallagher should certainly win the Tony ahead of the other nominees (his performance IMO was in a different class to any of the others). The only perfromance by a featured actor in a musical I have seen this year to compare with Gallagher's was Bobby Steggert in 110 In The Shade (and for some totally baffling reason, he is not even nominated!)
