We're just saying it's possible.

No one is really saying it's horrible and no one is saying that it should happen. We're simply saying that it's happened before, it happens all the time with award shows, and it's quite possible that it can happen this year.

See Alan Arkin's Oscar win, and hundreds of others. That's just the first one that popped into my head.

What John Gallagher has going for him is that is was great in an acclaimed play last year and he's great in an acclaimed play this year - so far it's 2 for 2. He plays a sympathetic character and he was the only performer in SPRING AWAKENING to give his character depth beyond the page. I would be happy if he won - I might even vote for him - but I wouldn't be surprised if the actual award came down to John McMartin (if he's even nominated - he may not be) and Jason Daniely - who is ALWAYS good.

I know arguing against McMartin is probably a moot point as of now, I predict that the committee will probably think in terms of the way that many people on this boards feel about his previous work. The winner can really be anyone at this point, maybe they all cancel each other out and based on prior excellence, will give it to J.M.

Who knows, these awards are so unpredictable and off-base so much that I don't even know why I watch anymore. Probably because the one night that there is a theatrical 'excellence' program on, how could I afford missing it?

As much as I love Danieley (always have since I was a sexually confused boy at the original Bway production of The Full Monty), Edward Hibbert gave the most memorable performance. Of course it didn't hurt that he had some great bitchy dialogue.

I am not saying the bigger the part the better, but that he does not stand out in his role which happens to be smaller.

Well yes, it's apparant to anyone who's seen GREY GARDENS that McMartin's role is extraordinarily small.

Let me clarify, I know that the Tony's are sometimes given for previous snubs in the past. McMartin has been snubbed in the past and some are thinking he may win largely because to that.

Yes. That's why people think he has a good chance at winning.

I am a firm believer in serendipity- all the random pieces coming together in one wonderful moment, when suddenly you see what their purpose was all along.

The category itself is such a toss up. It could go to the promising newcomer in a quite excellent turn (Gallagher), the old pro who isn't giving his best work but it's good enough to use as an excuse to make up for his previous snubs (McMartin), the scenery chewing bitchy Brit in the mediocre show (Hibbert), the soft spoken but golden voiced tenor in that same mediocre show (Danieley), or the surprisingly (and randomly) great performance in a solid production (Stieggart). Who knows?

John Gallagher Jr.'s performance in SA is riveting and unique. He completely captures the vulnerability, wonder, and rage of so many kids on the brink. The desperation in his singing just grabs you by the heart. He has created a Moritz all his own- a masterful achievement for an actor of any age. He deserves the Tony nomination, and the award.

Hibbert will not be getting a nomination. I would be willing to bet money on the fact that Danieley will win the Tony this year. I think John Gallagher Jr. will be a close second, and I frankly don't think McMartin will even be nominated. I have a feeling the nominees will be Gallagher, Danieley, Collum, David Pittu, and the fifth spot will be someone like Tam, Cavanaugh, Boerle or Fraser. I am pretty sure Danieley will win though, with Gallagher or Pittu being the biggest competition.

it's cullum with a U
not collum with an o
'cause collum with an o goes "ole" not "ul"

Sorry, my bad. That's like the 8th time I've done that too, when I know his name is pronounced kuh-lum. Oy, long day.

I've posted my opinion on at least two threads discussing this exact topic...but I think it would be a crime for McMartin to win for the role he's playing in Grey Gardens.

I doubt Cavanaugh will be nominated. However, I still have yet to see Curtains and Lovemusik so I can't discuss Danieley's, Hibbert's, or Pittu's performances.

I believe Hadley Fraser is listed above the title making him leading, but I have a feeling the producers will petition for him to be featured. He has a shot at a nomination in the featured categoy, but not in the leading.

Well, I think I am the only person who did not like John Gallagher Jr. and I would much rather see John McMartin win for his performance in Grey Gardens. My first vote still goes to Marc Kudisch, but unfortunately he will have been forgotten come award time.

And Caroline, everytime I see yours I am reminded of that really fantastic film I watched last night re: John Gallagher Jr. Award Chances

I pretty much agree with all these sentiments, aside from the Kudisch re: John Gallagher Jr. Award Chances If anything, he proved last year how versatile he was in a children's show! If someone can pull off Sondheim and CCBB, they've got to have some skill there.

I think John Gallagher has a shot at winning. Look at the last few winners in this category: Christian Hoff, Dan Fogler, Michael Cerveris. They were all a representative or head of a well-liked (even "hip") ensemble. Last year, I predicted Manoel to win, but that would have still fit the criteria. I think the trend could continue.

McMartin's role may be small, but even Adriane Lenox won the Tony for Doubt...

I know my opinion isn't shared and it's a personal thing with me, but John Gallagher's performance came in second for me, first is JOnathon B. Wright also in Spring Awakening! I know he wont' get nominated, but he sure deserves to be!! He gave the best acting performance in the show; yes, I know with the musical tony awards other criteria is important, too - I'm just offering my opinion on what moved me the most this past year.

I have no idea who will win this year - it will probably be clearer once the drama desk awards are given... it will be an interesting tony awards this year, with lots of surprises, and on nomination day, lots of snubs!!

I have to say that i thought some of the acting in Spring Awakening is overdone even though i love it and while normally i would find Johhny's performance over acting somehow he makes everything believable even with his shaky voice and mannerisms...i truly believed him as that character and he portrayed it so well..i really think he deserves to win, i mean honestly look at the character he created.

p.s. if i have spelling or grammar errors please don't point it out..it's just obnoxious and for some reason people on these boards love to do it.
