Grey Gardens Transfer News

According to Christine Ebersole, Grey Gardens is coming to Broadway!

I saw the show this past Wed. and afterwards I stayed after to get my Playbill signed. When I was talking to Christine, I asked her if the show would be transfered because it would be such a shame for a brilliant show like Grey Gardens to close for no good reason. Honest to god, she said directly to me after the show that a Broadway transfer IS going to happen. I had talked to Sara before and she said that was the buzz but she hadn’t heard anything definite. But Ebersole said it is going to be transferred to Broadway, no ifs ands or buts. Trust me, I was ecstatic!

I say from her lips to god’s ears!

I am sorry I have no article to prove it but this was strictly her words to me. I do have pictures I took with both Sara and Christine after the show so you can see that I did in fact talk to them:

I was nervous about posting this without an article as some people may think I was making it up but after talking with a few people on the board, I would like to keep die-hard Grey Gardens fans like myself posted. I am so anxious for a official announcement, hopefully one will come soon.

That is incredible! The last I heard was that they were looking for an off-broadway house to transfer to. But this is even better! YAY

I would very much like to recommend that Matt Cavenaugh lose much of his clothing during the move.

WOOHOO! A Broadway transfer will be wonderful for this OUTSTANDING show. I loved this show and just thought the world of it and have told everyone to see it before this Sunday! Now, with these words, hopefully they will get the opportunity! And Ebersole is absolutely fantastic in this gorgeous piece! WOOHOO!

That made my day! And to think, they are in the studio today recording the cast album! It is a GREY day! So beautiful!

Sleeper2....I was lucky enough to see him do that in "Dorian" when it was playing here in Denver! I saw the show 3 times!

re: Grey Gardens Transfer News

It wouldn't at all surprise me if the show moved. Christine Ebersole is pretty much guaranteed a Tony and her personal reviews could be enough to market the show to an audience unfamiliar with the original film.

An announcement of a transfer could also influence Outer Critics Cirlce and Drama Desk voters, who might be more likely to vote on something that has some future life in it.

Any move to the Barrymore or Cort means that the show is eligible for 2007 awards. It's too late for '06.

re: Grey Gardens Transfer News

Transferring isn't as easy as finding a new apartment. There are theatrical politics involved. Perhaps the Shubert Org. will save the Barrymore for something like the David Hare play coming in, or something for next spring that isn't yet on the general radar. They may shunt Grey Gardens over to the Cort, if, of course, the producers decide to ask Shubert for a theatre.

I don't think Grey Gardens would open on Broadway before next spring. Any number of houses might be available by then.

i would love for it to come to Broadway! hope some official news comes out soon! and any theatre will be fine for me, just as long as I could see it :)

I really do hope it is true. If it makes it to broadway I will see if for sure. As of now, I have no opportunity to.

re: Grey Gardens Transfer News

Based on the reviews we've read this week, there should be some houses open soon...

If the wait too long, the buzz around the show will die down. However, they can't just hurry and shove the show into an empty theater. I think by the time the '07 Tonys come around, I think the show will be long forgotten. She's getting all her praise now, and they should ride on that.

Next season's lead acting Tony winners will be Christine Ebersole and Raul Esparza. I can handle that! re: Grey Gardens Transfer News

Rentboy,

Ebersole's reviews would win her a Tony in any season. There is no need to worry that she will be "forgotten." If anything, hopefully the writing team will take the time to go away and make the changes to the actual script that reviewers complained about.

It would be much wiser to wait and open this show on Broadway in the spring. This is not a show that should brave the winter audience drought in NYC without a few Tonys under its belt.

re: Grey Gardens Transfer News

I have another update for all you Grey Gardens fans. Last night, I attended the final performance of Grey Gardens at Playwright's Horizons. When I was there I met the book writer Doug Wright. When I talked to him, he said that all signs point to yes for a Broadway transfer, and they will know for certain by the end of this week. So we should have some sort of announcement fairly soon. I cant wait!

That's great. I'm kicking myself for having missed the off-Broadway run, but alas I can only afford student tickets.
