Isn't that Chekhov's old saying? I so dearly wanted to see a head get chopped off. I was really disappointed when they put the guillotine in the shadows and then didn't even show the head tumble down from the sky. That would have been AWESOME. Like, with a spotlight following it down or something... Staging is one thing, who cares, but the musical quoting did bother me.

I'm not sure what you mean. The two shows are clearly written in similar styles. Considering the similar subject matter, setting, characters, events--it's hard not to draw comparisons. I think the author may have been better served by being more inventive with her music since the book is strong. I suppose you can argue that it's a matter of opinion whether the two shows are vastly similar but if nearly everyone who sees it says the same thing, then...

Not looks... the music quotes. And if you can't see the similarities between the two shows, there is nothing I can do to help you. I just don't like the lack of originality involved. Even Boublil and Schonberg's sound differs from show to show. Homage is one thing...

Did you really find it confusing? I thought an asset was that it told the story in an economical and engaging way, distilling it from a large and complicated novel. The novel's characters are caricatures as well. That's the genre. The composer made a sincere effort to flesh out the female lead (although she's given a song that stops the action and feels inappropriate at the end of the second act). This is actually not a bad fit. Scissor Sisters have kind of a disco retro sound anyway. I think you could easily pick and choose the story lines you wanted to use. Probably the one with Mrs. Madrigal and the rich guy, Michael and John, and Maryanne would have to come in somewhere... I guess...

There are only so many "plots". What makes it unique is the concept around it and any concept is at least viable. Arguably some ideas are more successful than others but you could at least musicalize pretty much anything.

I thought the show's biggest problems were that the music sounded recycled from a bunch of other shows of theirs (they've been writing the show for a really long time so I think the opposite is true, I think they just kept using music from it in other things) and--well, it just wasn't funny.

I do think movie and stage are different mediums... I would rather watch something cinematic than something that's just a filming of the stage show. Sweeney Todd is one of the best movie musicals I've ever seen because it's incredibly cinematic... a movie has to be a movie and a stage show a stage show. But it doesn't matter one whit whether they're singing or speaking, it's all fantasy anyway.

I go to the movies with the understanding that I'm supposed to be seeing Jennifer Aniston as a beleagued single mother looking for love in all the wrong places, not Jennifer Aniston. That's Mel Gibson as the tough talking no nonsense guy who seems impervious to getting blown up, not Mel Gibson. They're movies. It was a more cinematic ending for that character. In the stage show it's really weird... she shoots him and runs off. It's a moment of melodrama and I think Burton was trying to take out the sour note of melodrama (I've never understood why those two characters are played so sarcastically in the stage version when everything else is taken so realistically). Also, it would have been balls to the walls silly for Toby to do his monologue before killing Sweeney. I've always thought it was a sill...

Don't forget that the masses are turning out in droves for Alvin and the Chipmunks... there's no accountin' fer taste I tells ya :P

I never really expected this to happen and I was sort of dreading the critical and audience reaction to it...

I really adored Helena Bonham Carter in this, thought she came across better than Johnny did (the score did hurt a little in places where a bigger voice was required). Her vocals are utterly in synch with her character, a completely reimagined and sort of heart breaking Mrs. Lovett. Let me say I was incredibly skeptical about Helena and came away totally converted. It's a terrific performance and her vocals are very enjoyable. This may not be the Sweeney Todd that will wear out your CD player...
