I saw this production in Leeds and it gave me a blistering headache. The dance is brilliant, but there's so much, it is just overwhelmed by the poor pacing of the show. But on reflection, the biggest problem IMHO is the casting. The American guy in the lead role (Sam Lips) is wooden and lacks charisma. His dancing and singing were fine but his acting was subpar and I didn't feel a connection between him and any of the other characters.
I'm an Aussie and saw this here and was bored sh>tless[now that's an intelligent review !].
The lead castings are SO important in a show that was made for the stage but all that screeching and over the top 'acting' just doesn't work. High camp it is not !
