Thinking of making my first trip to London in September and disappointed to see almost all the shows are transfers from Broadway or long running shows that have been on broadway or toured and I have seen all the musicals except "Charlie & the CF"
Anything coming that isn't listed as coming soon on this website?
EDIT: Oops! Didn't see that Sunny Afternoon was a musical not a play...
There's this new play - and it's in two parts - some people seem excited by it. It's at the Palace Theatre which is a pretty nice venue. However, the tickets may be harder to come by than for Hamilton.
I will probably see a play or two. I would like to see Hand to God again and have my wife see it.
But, my heart is with musicals. I knew I had heard of new musicals coming soon, but couldn't come up with the names. I had heard Groundhog Day and The Bodyguard were coming but it is a mystery why they are not listed on the West End shows on this site. I haven't heard of Thriller which is list here.
Would love to see Murder Ballad have the CD. Looks like it doesn't start until Sep 29 that is later than my window...
Next question. Are there discounts available like for broadway shows. Coupon codes, rush tickets, something like TKTS in times square?
Hand of God will be done by the time you arrive and the Vaudeville theatre, where the show is at now, will be on its second show after Hand to God.
Discounts
The Bodyguard - which is moving into a huge theatre, for a limited 6 month run, will be hard to tell what tickets will be available. The star Beverley Night was awesome in the show, when it played the Adelphi (where Kinky Boots is now) and easily sold out. But since then Beverley has subsequently been in Memphis and Cats and a much bigger theatre, might make these tickets no so hot, worth waiting for when it opens to see if it is on TKT's.
Thriller - always a staple on TKT's.
Groundhog Day - The Matilda team getting together again, for a strictly limited run, before going to Broadway, so therefore do not anticipate any discounts. If anything I would urge you to book soon.
The Go-Between - Small Theatre/Michael Crawford will ensure this will do brisk box office business.
Sunny Afternoon - On TKT's a show like the Jersey Boys, but based on the Kinks, easy cheap ticket either at the booth or day ticket. A quintessential English show, therefore worth seeing.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Does not see for discount on TKT's, but should be an easy day ticket.
West End in a bit of a limbo at the moment, but a couple of musicals may come in before you come over.
Rock musicals and jukebox musicals seem to be the big thing at the theatre at the moment. I have just seen Rocky Hortor show, Priscilla the musical and American idiot all 3 shows were UK touring productions and each time I went to see these shows the theatre was packed. So I don't think musical theatre is in a bad way. Andrew Lloyd Webber has made 2 traditional musicals recently that were not big hits then he makes a rock mudical and has the biggest hit he has had in years with School of Rock on Broadway.
Anyhow my pick is American Idiot for a musical or for a play moustrap. Better still go and see one of the UKs touring production than you see a great play or mudical and see some of the UK other than London.
