Gene Kelly would have been 100 today.

Today is also his day on TCM Summer Under The Stars, which means Gene Kelly movies all day, from Inherit the Wind to Anchors Aweigh.

At 14, I discovered girls. At that time, dancing was the only way you could put your arm around the girl. Dancing was courtship. Only later did I discover that you dance joy. You dance love. You dance dreams.

Is there a "That's Entertainment"-style Gene Kelly compilation of great dance numbers? There should be.

A million billion years ago I randomly taped the AFI Salute to Gene Kelly when it was on TV (just googled - it was 1985) since I was 10 years old and into musicals, though I had no idea who Gene Kelly was at that point.

That special did feature long clips of most of his great numbers, and I watched that tape over and over until it wore out. I'd love to see that special again.

"The gods who nurse this universe think little of mortals' cares. They sit in crowds on exclusive clouds and laugh at our love affairs. I might have had a real romance if they'd given me a chance. I loved him, but he didn't love me. I wanted him, but he didn't want me. Then the gods had a spree and indulged in another whim. Now he loves me, but I don't love him." - Cole Porter

"I didn't smoke. I didn't smoke then, and I don't smoke now. We worked every day - that keeps you in pretty good shape. We could go for a long time in one take. You had to be in good shape with Gene Kelly." - Donald O'Connor

I wish I could call out of work later to stay home and watch these movies. On the other hand, it is a dance studio, so they would understand, right? J/K Watching "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" right now.

I went to 'Singing in the Rain' last night in theaters. He was an excellent performer and very charming.
