Any slowness elsewhere was compensated for by Parker and the orchestra galloping through "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face." Now that's one song that needs to not be fast! Occasional pacing issues aside, though, this was a good listen. It was fun to hear the cut music and realize how the different motifs developed and so forth. "Come to the Ball" brings out some interesting facets of Higgins's character; it doesn't fit the show all that well and they were wise to cut it, but I'm glad to have...

I also saw her many years ago -- she was pregnant with her son at the time, so however old he is, that long ago -- and thought her audience connection was fantastic. I remember her calling herself "this fat chick at the piano who thinks she can sing" and making everyone laugh. So maybe she has on days and off days with that ability to connect, because I know she has it sometimes!

His British resume is quite full (Barnum, Flowers for Algernon, Billy, some successful British films and TV series, solo albums, concert tours). And of course he was a smash hit in Phantom regardless of the size of the role. But it would be pretty unusual for someone to get a KC Honor based largely on a British resume that most Americans aren't aware of. In any case, British or no, I would be very happy for him if any other president gave it to him. But this one -- please, no.

Parker was brilliant. I've been reading and loving her reviews for years. People forget that, as scathing as she could be about plays and books she didn't like, she could be wonderfully enthusiastic about what she did like.

I had an awful feeling something like this was going to happen. :( He and the Kennedy Center pretty much ignored each other in his first term, but this time he's been trying to take over everything in sight, so I was afraid of this.
