Nov. 7 was on the casting breakdown as the opening. I'm guessing that's for previews, though, because shows don't often officially open on Fridays.
What's the problem with it being "dated"? It's a piece of theatre that reflects a time and place. They shouldn't have to change the slang. We can all figure out what it means, can't we now?

I'm not totally excited by the new "concept". Maria has a lot of dialogue on her own, as do the rest of the Sharks and Anita, etc. I know the story like the back of my hand, but I'd still like to know what's being said.
I also don't really think the contemporary thing would work, seeing as I'm pretty sure racial tensions between whites and Puerto Ricans aren't quite as harsh in 2007 as they were in the 50s...
Isn't West Side Story the way it is considered "contemporary" anyway?
