I think I am the only person on the planet who has never seen the movie version of THE SOUND OF MUSIC. But I did see the Broadway musical with Mary Martin and Theodore Bikel. I went into the theatre not expecting much, but I was pleasantly surprised. Not only were the stars and Kurt Kazner and Marion Marlowe AND the terrific Patricia Neway excellent, the show worked. The only dud for me was "Doe, a Deer...". I cringe everytime I hear that on the otherwise fine cast album. As to whether it deserved the Tony against GYPSY, don't get me started.
