This is one of the most desperate ploys in marketing I've encountered -- more than stunt-casting. Way to sacrifice the storytelling.
While I agree this is quite odd, it is only for one performance, and there is a designated section. I would be concerned about the noises people's phones make from the texting, tweeting and unexpected phone calls.
I am definitely not talented enough to tweet, facebook and pay attention to a show all at the same time.
