Was the Lyric's "Nicholas Nickleby" not considered? Maybe there was a dates cut-off (or maybe it was considered and nobody liked it). Anyway, I loved it (though the only other show I saw was "All My Sons" at Hunt which was great, too!).
I'm sure I just missed it, but when and where was the voting held? I find the inclusion of so much Ogunquit stuff disconcerting and the fact that Rachel York was recognized for that Dalmations tour to be very curious. I would love to know what the ballot looked like and who voted.
Nominations and voting were open to the public in early December on the Boston page. BWW did not nominate candidates. Fans did. Voting ended Jan. 10. According to Rob, who did the final auditing, just under 10,000 votes were cast.
Shows that ran Dec 2009 through Nov 2010 were eligible. Therefore Dalmatians was eligible because it played in Boston Dec 2009.
The Lyric's NN was eligible and was nominated for costumes. I can't remember now if it received other noms.
Ogunquit is considered within the Boston region because it is only an hour's drive from the city. A large percentage of its audience comes from the Boston area. The Globe and Herald cover Ogunquit's season, BWW reviews their shows, and the IRNEs (Independent Reviewers of New England) include them in their awards consideration, as well.
Theaters were notified of the awards as soon as voting opened. They all had equal opportunity to get the word out.
Here's a link to the final voting tallies (in percentages). You can click on each category to see the nominees and winners.
We welcome suggestions for making the awards even more equitable next year! Thanks.
Thanks for taking the time to fill in the blanks for me. I wish there were a way to disclose that basically it's a thing where theater companies get to goose the numbers up by asking people to vote. It's the only explanation for several of the things on there.
