Hello
My partner and I are getting married in just under 2 months and we are trying to find the perfect broadway song to play as our first dance at our reception.
We are avid musical theatre fans and have an array of choices but can't seem to narrow it down. We are hoping to find a song we like that has been covered on another albume, for instance we were thinking of "A Little Bit In Love" from Wonderful town sung by Rebecca Luker.
Any other suggestions (other than ALW songs)? Thaks for the suggestions!
((I know it's not from a show but it's so lovely))

I actually really love Kerrigan-Lowdermilk's song Five and a Half Minutes, if you interpret the end as a declaration of the fact that we don't know how to keep or measure love - that it's a mystery, but somehow we DO.
Also:
I'll Cover You (Rent - fairly cliche, but pretty sweet, I think)
Perfect for You (Next to Normal...an untraditional sentiment, but sweet)
Till There Was You (The Music Man)
I'd Give It All For You (Songs For A New World)
Can You Feel The Love Tonight (The Lion King - I'm a sap)
Is It Really Me (110 In The Shade - it's kind of sweet)
Some Enchanted Evening (South Pacific)
Love Song (Pippin)
Here's a sweet little saying from musical theatre that sould be sute on party favors: (from Aida)
There'll be no ties of time and space to bind us,
And no horizon we cannot pursue
We'll leave the world's misfortunes far behind us
And I will put my faith and trust in you.
Good luck choosing a song and congratulations!
How about the "happy" version of "Not a Day Goes By" from *Merrily We Roll Along" I'm sure there's a version somewhere without Mary's "I'll die day after day" descant.
I'm sure there's a recording of the "happy" version of "Not a Day Goes By", which is a beautiful song, even though I prefer the "sad" version.

Not sure if it'd be right for dancing, but "One Hand, One Heart" from West Side Story is wedding related.

"As Long As Your Mine"-Wicked
"Grow Old With You"-The Wedding Singer
"Sun and Moon"- Miss Saigon
Feel free to borrow my choice, since I'm a long way off from marriage. I heard it first a few months ago at Kelli O'Hara's concert at Feinstein's. She said she sang it at Kathleen Marshall's wedding. The song is "Always" and it was written by Irving Berlin for his wife for their wedding, I think.
"I'll be loving you, always..."
It's a great song and I plan on using it myself one day! Congratulations!
When I get married, I've always wanted my first dance to be to Bette Midler's "Do You Want To Dance"
Depends what you are looking for obviously, but here are my 3 suggestions
big grandiose romantic number- Some Enchanted Evening (South Pacific)
quieter and more intimate number- You, Wonderful You (from the film Summer Stock)
Fun/upbeat cute number- There Once Was a Man (The Pajama Game)
I prefer the "sad" version as well, but not for a first dance at a wedding. :)

Omigod You Guys - Legally Blonde
You could always do a nice waltz to "A Heart Full of Love"? :P
"I Have Dreamed" from The King and I.
It was also used wonderfully in the film "The American President" as the music Michael Douglass and Annette Bening had their public first dance.

Check out "Don't Ever Stop Saying I Love You" from A Catered Affair. That song makes me cry. It captures a beautiful sentiment.
Congratulations!

Hi There! I hope that you have a wonderful wedding day!
For Broadway songs I have always loved "The Next Ten Minutes" from The Last Five Years. That was one of my favorite moments in the show.
but also non Broadway related.. The band Train has a great song called "Marry Me" that is lovely. I have a friend getting married soon and they are considering using that song to walk down the aisle to.

If you don't think it's a jinx, I love "The Next Ten Minutes" for a wedding.
Otherwise, "Til There was You" from The Music Man is gorgeous and would also be appreciated by non-theatre people.
I always think though that first dance songs should have sort of emotional resonance with the couple. Is there a musical that you and your intended both really love?
I'll have to check out "Always."

What else? "Married". Kander and Ebb.
or
"What Are You Doing The Rest Of Your Life?" although it is from a film.
Irving Berlin considered "Always" to be so much the property of his and his wife that he refused permission for it to be performed very much in the last decades of his long life.
Speilberg did a movie called Always and Berlin did not allow the use of the song. I think Smoke Gets In Your Eyes was used instead.

I saw that movie! "Always" would have made much more sense than "Smoke Gets in Your Eyes," which is not really a love song IMO.
SporkGoddess, here is a clip of Patsy Cline singing "Always" in case you haven't heard it yet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qvZjZettoAo
If anyone knows of other artists who sing it, I'd love to find some more versions, but it's hard to search blindly for songs called "Always."
"Love Begins," which was cut from WONDERLAND. Nice lyrics!
YOUNGER THAN SPRINGTIME - South Pacific
That's seems like such a definitive song...
