I've heard tell that there was quite an outrage when top ticket prices scratched 50 bucks in the 80s.

I know I'm very late in responding to this message, but another post reminded me of this show. I saw the original cast revival at the Beaumont Theater on opening night in June, 1972. Richard Kiley and Joan Diener were the two leads. Irving Jacobson had broken his leg and was out. I was twelve and it never occurred to me that a show could make me cry. But that night, the ending had me bawling. Richard Kiley was brilliant, but it was Joan Diener's performance that touched me so deeply. Her portrayal of Aldonza's transformation was absolutely electrifying.

Never too late for a marvelous memory!

How I wish I could have seen Diener as Aldonza. The emotion she brings to the recording ALONE is staggering. And on a thrust stage to boot!
