I’m a big fan of Beetlejuice and joined that Facebook group to get updates and almost immediately regretted it. The amount of aggression after the Tonys was sickening. Most of them are acting like their one true purpose in life was ripped from them and they just keep bashing all the other shows. Even before the Tonys, the level of obsession was scary. Definitely not true theatre fans.
I’ve heard the Mean Girls group acts the same way.
I glanced at it this morning, and they were like threatening the ATW and many said to boycott Hadestown and all this other crap. It's weird when people get violent about....theater.

Yeah. The official Facebook pages are one thing. The people commenting are upset, of course. Reasonable. And then you go to the Facebook fan group and it’s like a frickin’ cult.
Most of them are filled with high school/college students who say they'd "boycott" a show. But they had no resources to attend in the first place.
If I had access to these types of forums growing up in Oklahoma, I imagine I'd have similar reactions to Wicked losing to Avenue Q. Or (please forgive this judgment) Xanadu losing to In the Heights.
Most recent discussion I've seen is them angry about the current production of Oklahoma! Saying it ruined one of their favorite shows. Something tells me they didn't pay enough attention to their Hugh Jackman version.
Yeah, they really are harmless. I’ve just never seen fandom to that level and I had to remove myself before it completely ruined the show for me.
There’s about 50 memes posted every day, <<edited by BWW staff>>, and a week later, there’s still Tony Award bashing. It was laughable at first and now it’s just sad.
The Anastasia Facebook fan group page is full of toxic, holier than thou people. They kicked me out because I told them recording the curtain call was bad, accused me of “doxxing” (huh?): admitted to trolling me, and are absolutely awful, apparently they even got the nice security guard kicked out of the group. Beware the Anastasia fam group wrath.

Wow. So it’s not just Beetlejuice. Are they mostly teenagers? Haha
The Beetlejuice fan group was great when it first started, but now it's a disaster. You can only say positive things about the show. It's the same people posting almost every hour. It's constant memes, and don't dare comment about how there is a good chance the show could close in the fall....

I’m (still) quite annoyed by Amber’s loss and people are very good at remaining civil while discussing.
Methinks it has to do with age."
If you don't mind me asking, what's the Facebook group? I would love to discuss Hadestown in a fan community, provided there was *some* level of sanity and civility.

Depends on the group. I've left them before and found better ones, even for the same show. Every fandom has toxic elements. There are toxic elements here on bww! The trick is curating your online experience to what makes you happy. But I'm pretty confident there's a faceboom group or two out there for everyone, even if it's not the "main" one.
The absolute worst, in my opinion, is the All Things Broadway group. It's a constant cycle of repeated memes, people going "omg I have an audition in two days what should I sing???" and just really bad behavior from the guy who runs the whole thing (who is treated like he's a king (plot twist: he's not)). The Anastasia one was rough when the allegations came out about the racism backstage. The Great Comet and Hadestown groups are really good (some hit or miss posters, but what're you gonna do - at least the admins and mods run things pretty smoothly there) and the Beetlejuice one is... well, it's a lot.
I’ve also noticed that a lot of people in these groups (Beetlejuice and Mean Girls mainly) haven’t even actually seen the show. They’re just going off the albums and what I’m assuming are bootlegs. There’s a lot of people mentioning that they can’t wait to see it live and in person.
In what looks like is a reference to the groups we are talking about, Alex Brightman (Beetlejuice) made a tweet recently about the difference between Fandom and Obsession. There’s no way it isn’t about that group. And then today, he posted that he received a threat because of that tweet, so he won’t be coming out of the stage door for a bit.
The Beetlejuice group is getting out of hand. They were just posting photos from Sophia's Instagram stating that she is in Spain, and they were all freaking out if she would be back for the next show or if she would be missing it. Her own mother had to comment to tell everyone she just went for two days. Hope they could all sleep after that.

Yeah. I’m pretty sure that may have been the very thing that caused Alex Brightman to tweet everything that he did. And clearly someone didn’t like it. Real surprise there.
I’m in all the Beetlejuice group and I think... some people just feel entitled. Pretty sure that initial tweet about fandom/obsession was made because we’ve got a cast member of the show IN the group. They see everything being posted and probably share it with the cast which I’m sure just... makes people look absolutely insane. I joined this group because it’s nice to have a set place where you can talk about your love for a show without clogging up spaces where people who don’t like the show exist.
