If you are interested in hearing Hugh sing some of the songs, go to
http://hughjackman.cjb.net
then "sounds" and then "songs".
BFO, Oklahoma! and his appearance on Saturday Night Live are also in there.

Posted: 11/10/04 at 4:10pmYeah, I burned the Beauty and the Beast ones. I actually wanted to see who the Belle was.

Posted: 11/10/04 at 5:16pmMillie, I saw the Melbourne production. Rachael Beck was Belle. I believe that it was one of Hugh's first professional gigs. That didn't matter, he so dominated each scene and he had a tremendous presence. I am afraid that I can't really recall much of Rachael's performance. But, I think she did make a reasonably fiesty Belle.

Posted: 11/10/04 at 7:44pmI don't like how the australian belle sings.
#11re: Beauty and the Beast Australia
Posted: 11/10/04 at 7:55pmugh, yea, what's up with Belle's voice?
#12re: Beauty and the Beast Australia
Posted: 11/10/04 at 7:59pmI don't know but her singing voice sounds like a goat and her speaking voice is too "Forced" instead of soft and sweet like Belle should be.

Posted: 11/10/04 at 8:01pmHugh doesn't sound too good either...I guess I'm comparing him to the guy on the Broadway CD.

I don't think that singing was ever Beck's strong suit. As I recall, Michael Cormick made an impressive Beast. But, the most memorable thing about the production was Hugh Jackman's presence.
Unfortunately, I don't have the Broadway cast against which to make a comparison.

If you're interested, Rachael Beck's (Belle) most recent bio can be found at: http://home.iprimus.com.au/eurekathemusical/cast_rachael.htm
She's currently doing a new Australian musical called Eureka which, sadly, has been a pretty big flop and is about to close... prematurely...

How sad to think that by the start of December no musical will be running in Melbourne.
The Producers is closing this week after only a seven month run.

You know, I had that very same thought yesterday. So many empty theatres down there. Though, I believe the Lion King may be headed your way some time soon. There was an article recently saying that Disney theatricals were "reconsidering" their decision not to tour the show. Who knows.
If nothing else, there's always Neighbours does Rocky Horror, LOL!

I just bought this recording via the internet (some Australian website I linked to) and do not enjoy the Belle one bit. Her vibrato is out of control. Jackman is, as always wonderful. But if you have the B'way or London recordings, it's really not too necessary to pick up this one.
Off-topic: I also picked up the The Secret Garden Aus. highlight recording with Anthony Warlow and Philip Quast. Their "Lily's Eyes" might just be the best I've ever heard it sung.

Posted: 11/10/04 at 11:24pmSaw Eureka a few months ago. The Cast Is very Impressive, full of well known Aussie names (and afew up and comers, look out for 'Simon Gleeson' he's gonna be big!). Dub'd the 'AUSSIE LES MIS', Eureka at times flys and at times stands still. I feel a few more years, investing in workshopping, would have helped the show trumendously. Have never been a big fan of 'Rachel Beck' in past shows and in this production, nothing has changed. But 'YAY' for the aussie musical!

Scotty, doesn't the Stockade happen off stage?
If so, they're missing the big, cathartic moment.

Apparently they've changed that part of the show at least 3 times, even after previews. When I saw it, it was off-stage, but may have ended up differently.
And while this thread has gone completely off topic, it looks like Eureka is moving to Sydney, after all.
