I saw LES MISERABLES in French in Paris in 1992. This was already the Cameron Mackintosh version, but all in French.
I am bilingual ( one of which is English). I was glad that I was thoroughly familiar with the music and had also seen the show on Broadway and in London before that. But it was quite an experience!
One musical I am slightly obsessed with is playing in Madrid now. It's called "Hoy No Me Puedo Levantar" (I Can't Get Up Today) and it is a smash hit, which is pretty amazing considering the show's running time is 4 hours 15 minutes with one intermission. It's a total spectacle and is a jukebox musical based on the songs of Spanish 80s band Mecano. It's sort of a "Rent" for the Spanish crowd. And it's completely awesome (I saw it twice while I was there).
If anyone is headed to Madrid, you must see this show! (You can follow it even if you don't speak Spanish.)
Irma La Douce was a huge hit in France (written by Marguerite Monnot who wrote some of Edith Piaf's greatest hits) and was translated into English and became a huge hit in London THEN came to Broadway. And DAMN, I'd love to see a revival of that.
"Don't worry, it's totally suitable for children. This is a show about passion, desire, bloodshed and death. Everything that makes life worth living. It begins in the narrow backstreets behind Pigalle. In an area we call "The Mileau" where the only crime is getting caught... It concerns a poule... oh. you don't know what a poule is? Well nevermind, you'll soon find out...."
I think "The Ten Commandments" would count. Don't get if it is related to Obispo's one in France, but it was in Canada b4 LA. Oh and sorry, it isn't related to going on BWY.
