I really didn't care for the score of Grey Gardens. A few interesting numbers, but most of the songs, especially those in the first act, were completely unnecessary. I think Spring Awakening definitely deserves to win here. What I love about that score is that it took Wedekind's inner-monologue-heavy script and made those inner monologues transcend by way of music. People complain that Spring Awakening's score doesn't forward the plot, but then again neither did those huge monologues by Wedekind. But they highlight what is going on in the kids' minds and bodies. I think it works perfectly for the show.
