Hey all!
I'm visiting a friend this weekend and happened to stumble across a copy of OH CALCUTTA on video in a second-hand music/movie store. It's on VHS, and my friend only has a DVD player, so I won't be able to watch it for a few days.
I'm just curious what exactly I bought. Is this a filming of the stage production or a movie version or...? I never knew any such film existed, which is all the more reason I grabbed it as soon as I saw it.
Any information you can give would be very much appreciated.

Posted: 7/1/07 at 12:08pmI rented it for the nudity. Hey, I was a teen. I hated it. Was it better live?

Posted: 7/1/07 at 12:11pmI have the DVD...it's rather...odd. Nice for theatrical history, but all in all, not a re-watch.

Posted: 7/1/07 at 2:44pmdidn't this show run for like 6000 performances? is the show odd or the recording? (I don't know much about this show) Isn't it a revue of sorts?

The revival lasted forever...the original run, not so much.
It's an odd show, it's a revue, and it's not as amusing as it must have been in the 70s.

My aunt was a replacement in OH CALCUTTA!
Every time I bring it up, she giggles.

The original actually lasted 1314 performances (ibdb.com), which is nothing to sneeze at.
The revival lasted 5959 performances.
And now I'm just super curious/anxious to be at home and watch the darn thing...

Posted: 7/1/07 at 5:19pmThe show is quite boring. What made the revival run so long was Japanese tourists, most had never seen nudity onstage before.

My sister got asked to leave The Duchess Theatre in London when she saw it with a group of friends for giggling. It was a real boreing show and they tried to make it arty and serious. Shows like ' Let My People Come' and The Dirtiest Show In Town' were done much more tounge in cheek. Just one for collectors i think. Thers a CD out there too.

My hippie friend recently bought the DVD of the show at Border's....
I watched through the first little "scene" which was sooo disturbing I found a reason to leave....small "children" having sex and then the guy kills the girl?! wtf!?

Also in the cast was Alan Rachins - later of L.A. LAW and DHARMA & GREG (Dharma's dad).
And, as Rachins has pointed out on talk shows, he and Macy were NOT totally nude. They both wore toupees.
The choreographer and featured dancer was Margo Sappington - one of the original "Turkey Lurky" girs from PROMISES, PROMISES.

Posted: 7/2/07 at 12:49pmBy the way, Bill Macy was also in the original PRODUCERS movie, as the jury foreman who delivered the line, "We find the defendants INCREDIBLY guilty!"

Posted: 7/2/07 at 1:20pmThe production values on the DVD are horrid. Grainy, bad audio. I can only imagine what a VHS will be like. It is very dated and speaks to the cultural norms of the time. It is one part Benny Hill and one part schmaltzy sixties "love-in." Hard to sit through.
