Okay, if the envelope is closed, that means that there are no new messages that have been posted since you last read the thread. If it is open, there are new messages that you haven't read. You should do a search, because some other posters have explained it better in the past.

A thread turning red means is is a "hot topic".
Once it hits a certain (high) number of posts and/or views, it turns red.

Hmmmm son/gunn has an idea It would be nice if we could include this info in the introductory email everyone gets when they join up if it is possible. Just an idea because this seems to be a common problem of people not being able to figure out what they mean.
