...Jammie Thomas-Rasset, a single mother of four from Brainerd, Minn., was found liable for violating the copyrights of major labels including Sony BMG, Warner Brothers and Universal by downloading 24 songs from Kazaa, a peer-to-peer file-sharing service.
This really seems beyond ridiculous.

That's... ridiculous. That amount pretty much will ruin her life.
How on earth did they get away with that? What on earth could they have argued to deem such a financially crippling lawsuit just? 24 songs?! Jeez.
I know they'll be wanting to make an example of her, but come ON...
That is absolutely insane. How does illegally downloading 24 songs amount to a 1.92 million dollar fine? And how on earth is a single mother of four supposed to pay that?
An earlier judgment of $220,000 against Ms. Thomas-Rasset was thrown out by a judge who deemed it excessive.
So a $220,000 fine is too much but apparently the jury had no problem sticking a fine of over a million dollars to her.
Oh yeah, yeah. That's really sticking it to the man. Charge this woman with a 1.92 million dollar fine, that her children's grandchildren will most likely still be paying off when she goes.
REALLY?! Are these companies really doing this? They should be fining youtube for allowing people to put up music videos, movies, tv shows, etc... illegally.
This is just insane.

If this judgment is allowed to stand I hereby vow that I will never buy another CD or music download from a label or artist associated with the RIAA for as long as I live.
F them!

how is iTUNES getting away with a buck or so?"

They're trying to make an example out of this woman, which is absolutely deplorable. The RIAA are the real criminals here - their lawyers use bullying tactics and pull stunts like this.
There will be an appeal and the fine will be thrown out. They want to make an example of this poor woman thinking it will throw the fear of God into them.
It is pretty crappy to grandstand like this and ruin a family's life. May RIAA garner all the wrath of the music buying public it deserves!!!
This & viruses are the reason I don't download music like that anymore. Now it get from other people!
