ORLANDO - SeaWorld officials are still trying to determine the cause of a midair collision during a dolphin interaction Saturday that killed one of the animals.
The dolphins were performing jumps in Discovery Cove when the collision occurred, spokeswoman Becca Bides said this morning.
"Unfortunately, one of the animals was injured and has died," she said. "The second animal appears fine and is under veterinary supervision."
The dolphins were in the center of the pool, over deep water and about 50 feet from the onlookers.
"This is an unfortunate, random incident," she said. "While it is not unusual to have two animals performing aerial behaviors at the same time, we are reviewing the situation to ensure even such a random incident does not occur again."
The dolphin that was killed, Sharky, was 30 years old.
freaky.

Dolphin shows are the number one most depressing thing in the world. Any time I was forced to go to one as a child made me want to stand up and yell at the people clapping for the dolphins doing tricks.

"Dolphin shows are the number one most depressing thing in the world."
Even more than them being trained by the Navy to plant bombs?
And that's just one thing that comes to mind. Concerning dolphins.
And being rewarded with fish is probably better than being whipped or poked with a barbed stick.
dolphin shows are the number one most depressing thing in the world.
no, i think people who would actually type such an asinine opinion are much more depressing.
I love dolphins, though I've never actually seen one.
This is sad.

DG, that's so weird you say that b/c I just watched Day Of The Dolphin Saturday night.

No, mambo youre wrong, dolphin shows are more depressing than people with differing opinions than yours.
Oh wait, does that make me an idiot or a moron or asinine?
; )
not differing opinions, catastrophically stupid ones. like yours.

Kasie, you should really try to make it happen sometime. I grew up in a place where I could swim with them sometimes in the wild - it was life-changing. They are magical creatures.

When the Oceanarium opened at Chicago's Shedd Aquarium when I was in 8th grade, I was really excited because I would finally get to see dolphins up close. But then having to go to that show on field trips, with family, visitors, it got to be so upsetting to see people clapping for those poor creatures stuck in the tank. I kept thinking "they probably dont want to be jumping around like that"
I'll keep that in mind DG.

I went to one of those shows once as a kid, and I agree - it's awful. Poor things.
I've always heard that the dolphins are very well cared for in those parks.
I hope so.
I used to never go to the circus because they shocked the elephants. I would always just cry and go home.

I'm sure they are. However, animals in shelters are also usually very well taken care of, you know?
Whatever. Anyway, in this case, it's sad.

I think they are well cared for. But its just the concept of a dolphin show---
no taz, they torture them to get them to do those awful tricks! mostly with mind control and electronic implants. there is nothing more depressing on earth than those dolphins. nothing. not even little kids being boned by catholic priests. not even the ongoing slaughter in darfur. nothing. at. all.

finally we agree on something!
nope, unlike you, i understand hyperbole and its uses.

Really? Name another use for hyperbole besides exaggerating.

And what you were doing was really more irony of tone/sarcasm than hyperbole. But wait mambo keeps calling me stupid and an idiot and a moron so I guess maybe I dont really know these things???
