This is a different offer . It includes a book. And so far it is the cheapest I have seen it.
Can we shop Target yet?
Sound Of Music deal.

No.
Next question.

And, if you have a Target Card, you get it for an extra 5% off!
I'm excited that I'll get it for like 16 bucks.
My boycott starts on the 3rd!
And a percentage of what you pay goes to support politicians who fight equality! Get excited about that.

Actually, the percentage doesn't go directly to those politicians. It goes to people who work for Target and then donate. There is a difference.
I mean, would you fault Toys R Us or Barnes and Noble if one of their employees donated to someone you didn't support politically? No.

Wait until they put the Oprah show as an extra.
Except, other than the testimony of the Viet Nam vet and the hearing impaired woman, that Oprah reunion was lousy.
Actually it was pretty good.
Not from my perspective. We heard, nor saw anything new.

I'm pretty sure the donations you're talking about were made on behalf of Target Corp, not just by someone working for Target.
Yup. What Phyl said. Target made the donations.
Yup. Not from your perspective. From mine. DUHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
And yes Phylils.. you are so right.
So what, in particular, did you like about it?
I thought it was a very nice tribute to the movie. Sure it was more like a commercial than anything else. But I liked seeing Julie and Christopher Plummer together. I never get tired of hearing Julie tell the helicopter story. I loved the clips and backstories they showed. I thought Christopher Plummer was at his best behavior... and for me that was just delicious to watch. Sure there really wasn't anything new. I can't wait to watch the Blu Ray with friends this Friday night and pour over the extras. Sorry I sounded so snarky with the duh..... I forget my bitchy humor comes off mean here. So sorry.
No apology necessary, but thanks. I saw TSOM for the first time, on its opening day in Philadelphia, March 17, 1965, in its glorious 70MM Todd-AO and 6-track stereophonic sound presentation. I went back on the 19th, and just kept going back (it was in theaters for 4 1/2 years during its initial release!) It was completely life-altering for me. I've never grown tired of it, and I can't wait to see the hi-def transfer!

JohnBoy - not new to you is an entirely different thing than not new to anyone else. Obviously, you are not the norm.
I thought it was very entertaining.
Yes, you're right. But I was completely moved by the hearing impaired woman and vet.

No offense JohnBoy2, but are you not satisfied with anything Sound of Music related these days? You were not happy with the sing along engagement & you didn't like the Oprah episode dedicated to the whole thing. How come? (I'm sorry if this comes off as attacking...I promise I'm not)
I'm the biggest fan I know of the whole subject matter (movie, play, true story, etc) and most of that Oprah stuff, I already knew. But I am happy just to see a movie that is 45 years old getting this much attention and promotion. I can't wait to see what FOX & the Rodgers and Hammerstein Organization has in store for the 50th anniversary!

Bringing back Uncle Max from the dead?
I thought the Oprah show was fine. I wanted to hear more stories from the kids, though. As cool as it was to have the Von Trapp grandkids on to sing, I would have rather kept the show focused on the movie stories. I think Angela Cartwright said one sentence about the chronology of her child actor career ("Make Room for Daddy" was first, then Sound of Music, then Lost In Space). That was it! Too bad. Still it was great to see them all together.
If you want to see a better (and very touching) reunion of the seven kids from the film, it's an extra featurette on the DVD, which I'm sure will be carried over to the new Blu-ray release.
I'm very excited to see the film in HD, especially after checking out the clips on this link!
A big difference ...
The Blu-Ray is superb, in every way. The new DVD is a better picture than any other standard definition release, but it is set far too dark.
As for the sing-a-long, I find it an insult to invite anyone to turn what I find the most perfectly crafted motion picture ever made, into some sort of two-bit Rocky Horror camp-fest. The thought of it turns my stomach.
As for Oprah, there was simply no new ground covered, and it would have been nice if there had been. Why not feature Eleanor Parker and Dan Truhitte - even Marni Nixon!? That would have been unique and different. They wasted far too much time showing clips from the film (who needed to see clips?!), and too much time rehashing stories that have been told, ad nauseum (helicopter, Kym can't swim, Plummer's disdain, careful not to make it too saccharin, etc.) I look forward to, hopefully, something new from the kids and their book.
I am curious as to which packages people are buying most?
I bough the Target little book, thingy. 3 discs. Standard DVD and 2 Blu-Rays (feature and extras) - $19.99.
I purchased the Blu-Ray + DVD Combo pack. I personally didn't feel the need to spend extra money on the deluxe package. The extras offered with some of these Special Edition DVD boxed sets never really interest me enough to dole out the asking price to purchase them, even if they go on sale.
For me it really comes down to knowing if it is really worth upgrading a film I already own based on the restoration/transfer done on the film as well as the special features included within the discs as far as footage, commentaries, documentaries, etc. not necessarily the "physical" special features like mini lobby cards, posters, watches or program reproductions. Those, at least to me are just a whole lot of unnecessary bells and whistles that take up way too much shelf space.
Is there a difference between the actual film itself in these different packages? A while back I had bought "Fightclub" from Costco on Blu-Ray. The packaging was different. The disc itself took a long time to load and there was something wrong. It would pause between chapters. Do discount stores get cheaper or different batches?
