This is for you Neddy!
The year is 1906.
One hundred years ago.
What a difference a century makes!
Here are some of the U.S. statistics for the Year 1906 :
************************************

Only 14 percent of the homes in the U.S. had a bathtub.
Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.
A three-minute call from Denver to New York City
cost eleven dollars.
There were only 8,000 cars in the U.S., and only 144 miles
of paved roads.
The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.
Alabama, Mississippi, Iowa, and Tennessee were each more
heavily populated than California.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower!

Alaska hadn't been admitted to the Union yet.
The population of Las Vegas, Nevada, was only 30!!!!
Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea
hadn't been invented yet.
There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.
Two out of every 10 U.S. adults couldn't read or write.
Only 6 percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.
Eighteen percent of households in the U.S. had at least
one full-time servant or dom estic help.
There were about 230 reported murders in the ENTIRE U.S.A. !
Try to imagine what it may be like in another 100 years.
It's hard to imagine what the next 100 years has in store...
My grandparents were born around this time, and when I think of all the technological advances that they saw in their lifetime... It has to have been thriling for them!
From the first flight to a man on the moon. The mind boggles at it all.
I just love reading things like this. Must be the frustrated history major in me.
Now one may wonder what will life be like in another 100 years?

"Meet George Jetson!"
Oh, fun!
My great-grandmother was born in 1900 or 1901. (Yes, she lived through the earthquake!) She died several years ago, but this is still a fun read because she mentioned some of these things. :)

SweetQ, you forgot to mention that women wore ankle-length skirts and petticoats and very tight corsets.
The 20th Century must have been a wonderful time in which to come of age. Just compare the early 1900s (say 1906) to the late 1900s (say 1996) -- a big change! Now, think of what 2096 will be like. That is, if we make it that far.

"Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and ice tea hadn't been invented yet."
That's not correct. Iced tea was being served before 1906. In fact, it was very popular at the 1904 St. Louis World's Fair.
Kringas--I thought the same thing.
Are they speaking of the mother, or the unborn fetus?
Is this a little pro-life, or pro-choice item?
EDIT: In that case, I nominate politics as the number one killer in America!
