2007 Movies That Are Being Overlooked

Black Book was the Netherlands Foreign Language Oscar entry that wasn't nominated and wasn't released here until 2007. It didn't need to be released here first to be nominated. Fantastic film.

Little Black Book was that awful film with Brittany Murphy.

Lives of Others was another fabulous film that may have been overlooked, though I saw it was playing downtown somewhere (Angelika?) at least up until a few weeks ago and it was released in Feb.

I've now seen DEAD SILENCE and am most disappointed that it wasn't laugh-out-loud-hilarious from start to finish. It was almost well done in parts! Disgraceful. re: 2007 Movies That Are Being Overlooked

The Lives of Others won the Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film this past season, so, critically at least, I wouldn't think it was overlooked.

EVENING is coming to mind.

It's not brilliant, it's not even totally wonderful - but I believe that there's enough in there that EVERYONE should see it. Hugh Dancy's performance is completely spellbinding and brilliant. He moved me to tears several times. It doesn't deserve to be the flop that it's become.

As Wanna Be A Foster asked in the 2nd post of this thread, overlooked by whom?
Obviously not critically overlooked.
While it did only 10 million in the US (a surprise to me actually now that I look it up), for a foreign film, I guess that may be a lot.
Unfortunately The Host didn't do that well, for a foreign film or a horror movie. It was great, should've done better.

Well, you've got to put it into perspective a little bit. Films like THE HOST and THE LIVES OF OTHERS never had full, huge, big, multi-plex releases. They were tiny little releases. That's all they were ever meant to be in the US.

Yeah, I know and it's a shame. I know a lot of people around the country who wanted to, but couldn't see The Lives of Others because it wasn't released wide enough.

But despite what a distributor release plan is initially, if it exceeds expectations and has demand, the release can be widened and has been.

I'm still surprised The Host didn't get a better release and even still didn't do that great. I thought that type of film would do better, foreign or not. I thought it was fabulous. Though I wanted to support it when it was released and take a friend I knew would love it, we never got the chance mostly because of his schedule. I saw it at the NY Film Festival since it was in my subscription plan.

The Host was a lot of fun, but maybe the anti-American element kept people away. I'm should do very well on dvd though.

I'll second "The Namesake"

There was a really low-budget film called "Once" that came out in late May, I think, that I really enjoyed.

-Was that a fart?
-My fault, I fear.

I tried sooo hard to love Evening and couldn't, it was just.... bad, the concept was so wonderful but something was lost in the execution. I was watching all these amazing actresses in this mediocre movie...depressing re: 2007 Movies That Are Being Overlooked

Also Paris Je T'aime.. can't say enough good things about that movie

I don't think "Breach" has been overlooked per se, but it is a great film and Chris Cooper gives an incredible performance.
I have a feeeling he will ignored come Oscar time though.
