Some are good, some bad.
Lost not getting nominated for best drama is ridiculous.
Jim Parsons and Big Bang (as well How I Met Your Mother) should have been nominated.
Not surprised by the no noms for the music for Princess and the Frog.
Glad Glee got the love it deserved.
Modern Family's nom was great, but no one from the cast deserved a nod? Really? Not that the best supporting actor category needs to be tougher with NPH and Michael Emerson in it already, but Eric Stonestreet and Ty Burrell deserved noms (though would Ty be lead?)
I've only seen the terrible previews for THE BLIND SIDE where Sandra Bullock is wearing an unfortunate wig and has a very put on accent. The movie looks like every movie about a white woman helping a challenged black kid that has come out in the past two or three decades. Love Sandra Bullock, but an Oscar nod for that? Oh well, good for her that everyone is enjoying it.
I'm glad to see Michael Emerson nominated, he is brilliant! Though I agree it was disappointing to see LOST get snubbed for Best Drama, but as long as TRUE BLOOD is in there, I'm happy.
I wonder what categories the MODERN FAMILY actors were placed in. I imagine Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, and Ed O'Neill were going for lead, but how about Sofia Vergara, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, and Eric Stonestreet? They have a better chance at getting supporting nods.
I am rooting for The Fantastic Mr. Fox to win for best animated movie. That seems to be a critical darling but I know absolutely nobody else who saw it.
"Take It All" not nominated by un-mixed "Cinema Italiano" was a little strange. Guess they had to make it interesting by nominating Bono and Sir Paul.
I know Betty Draper had a larger story line but I am shocked January Jones gets recognized now, let alone chosen before Elisabeth Moss.
I am kinda hoping Glee shocks everybody and wins best Comedy (even over my 30 Rock)- just to peeve the haters.
I guess you can get nominated for making a fool of yourself on a week-to-week basis. Hi, Courteney Cox. If the GG felt like they must go crass, low-brow they should have nominated Sarah Silverman.
I, unlike Ray, will not trash the movies I have yet to see. I have seen The Blind Side. It's alright but I already knew about the story and read the book (which the Oher storyline was about 1/3 of the book). Sandra was good but I pretty much want a restraining order against Tim McGraw from any Hollywood studio.
I was hoping Melanie Laurent got nominated for Inglorious Basterds. Her and Waltz were the strongest characters (as they were more intertwined than the rest of an actually fantastic cast) but there was too much competition in the Supporting Actress category.
Yeah for Joseph Gordon-Levitt! He'll always be Roger from Angels In The Outfield for me.
Apart of me wanted Woody Harrelson nominated for Zombieland.
Duplicity wasn't terrible but it pails in comparison to the previous Owen-Roberts pairing and also Gilroy's brilliant Michael Clayton.
If Christoph Waltz doesn't win there will be hell to pay. I don't care if Captain von Traap aka my first movie crush aka Chris Plummer wins.
I am glad Matt Damon's brilliant (best role he ever acted not named Jason Bourne or... well if you have seen the movies you know where I'm going) performance in The Informant! was not overlooked.
I assume Broken Embraces is a lock for Best Foreign Language movie through the awards season as it is Almodovar but keep an eye on The White Ribbon, the German film. The German film industry has been right up there with Spain this past decade in quality.
It wasn't a wig, it was highlights.
Oh and you are attacking Michael Oher, a real person. He was illiterate based on circumstance, on top of being homeless, and he ended up an honor student on top of being an incredibly gifted football player. You might want to revise your comments.
I think District 9 deserved Avatar's place in the Best Motion Picture Drama category.
Have you even seen both movies to judge?
"Love Sandra Bullock, but an Oscar nod for that?"
If you have not seen the movie, you have no place to judge her performance nor to criticize her nomination.
(Of course, I'm talking to someone who thought MAMMA MIA! was the best film last year.)
Do I have to see both to judge?
You removed one movie in favor of another, so yes.
Actually, I'm going to answer my own question. No. No I do not.
Looking at the movie previews for Avatar, it really doesn't interest me that much. And it's a matter of opinion anyways. So I still think District 9 deserved Avatar's spot.
"I was hoping Melanie Laurent got nominated for Inglorious Basterds. Her and Waltz were the strongest characters (as they were more intertwined than the rest of an actually fantastic cast) but there was too much competition in the Supporting Actress category."
YES. I thought Laurent was incredible, and I'm sad to see her not in there! I think Diane Kruger should have gotten some kind of recognition too. If Waltz doesn't take it, I will be furious. His performance was one of the finest I've ever seen. He put me on edge just drinking a glass of milk.
Also wondering where Jennifer Carpenter is...but I'm glad John Lithgow was nominated. For such a recognizable face, he completely disappeared into the character and did wonders with the dialogue. He was just incredible, genuinely frightening. It's his to lose, I think (hope).
I'm kind of surprised about True Blood, because although I love the show and it's probably my favorite right now, it can be really...bad. It's fun and entertaining, but sometimes it's also downright terrible.
I'm happy to see Big Love on there, since its last season aired so long ago. Especially excited for Chloe Sevigny, although she'll probably (rightfully) lose to Jane Lynch.
Trailers versus full-length feature. Nope, not that same criterion to have a real opinion of either or, even though I did love District 9.
I agree JAG. I hope the IG cast gets nominated for best ensemble in the SAGs, but I think they would lose to Nine.
Yes I love me some True Blood but for every great episode there is one very laughably bad episode, but at least it goes into a blaze of glory. Mad Men should win anyway.
Well those highlights sure make her look disastrous. And I didn't mean to attack the real life person, just the old, tired and frankly deeply problematic narrative, but I did change it.
Maybe TRUE BLOOD has some campy moments, but Alan Ball is one of the most brilliant writers out there. I've yet to see a TV writer that is so neatly able to capture the complexities of human life and death. Not only that but his actors and production team are top rate. I mean who would have thought of New Zealand Oscar winner Anna Paquin as mind-reading Southern belle Sookie Stackhouse? Brilliant!
I would just like to say that I am in love with strummergirl.
You GO girl!
P
Thank you for changing it.
I will say the year had to have been weak for women in drama because it was good but I enjoyed her in other films. Basically nice performance but an award performance? No.
"Looking at the movie previews for Avatar, it really doesn't interest me that much. And it's a matter of opinion anyways."
It doesn't interest you so it doesn't deserve a nomination over another movie you saw? That's ridiculous. Plus, you said "anyways" so your point is automatically invalidated.
So you'll telling me you've never seen a movie just based off how terrible a trailer looks? Or because the trailer just doesn't interest you? I didn't say Avatar looks horrible, I'm not trashing it. I just have no interest to see it. If you'll trying to convince me otherwise, then it's not working.
Of course I've decided whether or not to see a movie based on a trailer - but that doesn't mean I can judge if it's award-worthy or not.
Some movies may not be up my alley, but that doesn't make them unworthy of awards, and what's more, without my having seen them, it CERTAINLY doesn't make me able to judge!
Besides, trailers are often instruments of a marketing department and are certainly NOT the same as the whole film. How many comedies have you seen trailers for that look funny -- then you get to the theater and all the funny parts were in the trailer? Based on those trailers should the movies get awards?
I'm pissed that "Castle" was shut out. If anything, Nathan Fillion should have been nominated in the best actor category. Grrrr!!
