24 hour curfew in Arkansas town

A small Arkansas town has instituted a 24 hour curfew to try and curtail their out of control crime rate.

Yeah, that'll fly.

There are a couple of gem quotes in this article that I have to pass on. I have nothing against people from Arkansas, but these folks don't do their state any favors...

"The citizens deserve peace, that some infringement on constitutional rights is OK and we have not violated anything as far as the Constitution."

You've basically ordered people to become shut-ins, and you can't understand why that's unconstitutional?

Fielder said officers had not arrested anyone for violating the curfew, only questioned people about why they were outside. Those without good answers or acting nervously get additional attention, Fielder said.

This seems like a real sound strategy.

Here's my personal favorite..

"As far as I'm concerned, at 3 o'clock in the morning, nobody has any business being on the street, except the law," Councilman Eugene "Red" Johnson said. "Anyone out at 3 o'clock shouldn't be out on the street, unless you're going to the hospital."

I've been out at 3:00 in the morning before, and never had any intention of committing a crime. Did "Red" not go to college, where you would stay out until the bars closed?

Why not just build a large prison around the curfew area? That way if there is violence it will be confined and everyone else will be safe. Poor people don't have money so what can they do with freedom anyway? It's much easier to impose martial law than combat the causes of poverty and crime, isn't it?

As I understand it, you're not allowed to leave your home unless you have some kind of legitimate business somewhere.

What constitutes legitimate business, I don't know. Can you go to the mall just to browse? Or would that warrant "additional attention" as they put it? What if I want to go get an ice cream cone during the hot summer months?

You don't need ice cream during the hot summer months. Ice cream may feel cool when you eat it, but it actually raises your body's temperature once all the fat and sugars in ice cream are metabolized.

Trust the police. They know what's best for you.
