32 US Reps for Bush Impeachment Inquiry

By Matthew Cardinale, Editor and National Correspondent, Atlanta Progressive News (March 16, 2006)

(APN) ATLANTA – 32 US House Representatives have signed on as sponsors or co-sponsors of H. Res 635, which would create a Select Committee to look into the grounds for recommending President Bush’s impeachment, Atlanta Progressive News has learned.

Their co-sponsorships of H. Res 635 come on the heels of reports that US Senators Barbara Boxer (D-CA) and Tom Harkin (D-IA) will support US Senator Russ Feingold’s (D-WI) bill, S. Res 398, to censure President Bush.

The two latest co-sponsors of H. Res 635 are US Rep. David Wu (D-OR) and US Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN).

“Because of my concern, and that of many of my constituents, regarding the misleading and fraudulent intelligence used by the Bush administration to present its case for war in Iraq, I decided to cosponsor H. Res 635 introduced by Representative John Conyers,” Wu said in a statement prepared for Atlanta Progressive News.

US Rep. Wu has held a series of Town Hall events focusing on the war in Iraq in his House district, the Congressman’s spokesperson said. At these events, numerous constituents brought up the bill for H. Res 635, Wu’s spokesperson noted, adding that Wu voted against the resolution for the authorization for the use of force in Iraq, and he has always questioned Bush’s justification for the US invasion of Iraq....

The current 30 total co-sponsors are Rep. Neil Abercrombie (D-HI), Rep. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Rep. Michael Capuano (D-MA), Rep. Lois Capps (D-CA), Rep. William Lacy Clay (D-MO), Rep. John Conyers (D-MI), Rep. Sam Farr (D-CA), Rep. Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Rep. Mike Honda (D-CA), Rep. Sheila Jackson-Lee (D-TX), Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA), Rep. John Lewis (D-GA), Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN), Rep. Jim McDermott (D-WA), Rep. Cynthia McKinney (D-GA), Rep. Gwen Moore (D-WI), Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY), Rep. James Oberstar (D-MN), Rep. John Olver (D-MA), Rep. Major Owens (D-NY), Rep. Donald Payne (D-NJ), Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY), Rep. Martin Sabo (D-MN), Rep. Bernie Sanders (I-VT), Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), Rep. Fortney Pete Stark (D-CA), Rep. John Tierney (D-MA), Rep. Nydia Velazquez (D-NY), Rep. Maxine Waters (D-CA), Rep. Lynn Woolsey (D-CA), and Rep. David Wu (D-OR).

Once again, stepping away from the constant pre-game day strategy sessions (with the x's and o's and arrows on a chalkboard), it's good to see some people deciding to do something based on what they think is right. I know, I know, this is America, where winning is more important than doing what your conscience tells you is the right thing.

Oh no! Oh no! Oh no! Better keep our big liberal mouths shut about impeachment or we'll encourage Republicans to vote!

Unfortunately for Republicans who are thinking that calls for censure and impeachment witll help them, the 33%-and-falling approval rating for Bush (and even lower for Cheney and Congress) represents record numbers of Republicans who are leaving the party in droves.

It all hinges on what happens in November, Diebold-be-damned.

Don't let the Republican Noise Machine frighten you away from calling for censure and impeachment. Call, write, email your senators and representatives!

see, namo, you and i agree there. i do commend russ for doing this if indeed it is conscience that's driving it. well, actually i commend him either way for taking what is an unpopular stand and doing it without checking with the party leaders first. i've said before that unless the democratic party embraces its base and its leaders come out and say what everyone's afraid of saying that they'll never be able to get beyond their current state. i think that initially they'll lose a sh*tload of votes and maybe the netroots will realize that the country's a whole lot more conservative than they were willing to admit, but over time once people start to see them as willing to stand up for an issue regardless of whether it's polling well (or whether or not it loses them moderate votes) that it can only help them as a party. bubba could triangulate like nobody's business, but he's not around anymore so they have to show some balls and take their lumps before moving on.

so bravo russ, whether you did it for conscience or to secure the netroots support for '08 (and because i can already see the gop's ads).

I consider myself middle of the road.
This is not about politics. The man violated the oath of office and should be impeached.

I agree that most of us (on BWW and in the country) have evolved into exactly what Namo is metaphoring (can that be a verb?). Teams! My team is gonna kick your team's butt.

But, at this point, I don't see how there can be teams when it's just clear that this admin is a DISASTER. I don't see how ANY intelligent American making less than $200,000 a year can STILL believe in Shrubya. I can't believe that if you truly love this country and want what's best for this country that you can be satisfied with what this man is doing. Support a Republican or a Democrat! Fine. But, HOW can anyone support THIS man and his ABOMINABLE admin is beyond any stretch of my imagination. Forget the gripes and bitchings of the First Term/2000 election/Michael Moore/2004 election Go Team Go Rah Rah Rahs.

Look at what has happened in this Second Term alone! He needs to be held accountable.

The country's becoming a whole lot LESS conservative every day, thanks to the Bush administration's lies, corruption and $9 TRILLION debt.

Teams?

Sure.. but in this "superbowl" or "world series" - there are no winners. We've all been losing for several years now

He's twice divorced and Jewish, which they say renders him unelectable to Papa's "netroots."

Feingold himself responds to the unproven contention repeated here by Papa that calls for censure and impeachment embolden Republicans:

FEINGOLD: It seems to me appropriate, when the spin machines are out there and people are using various language, to come out and reiterate my reasons for doing this.

I think that the press decided immediately that somehow this was a bad thing for Democrats and a good thing for conservatives. The facts don't bear it out. You don't have the polls to prove it. The way my colleagues are responding to me suggests to me they're thinking about this, that they feel that there has to be some accountability.

So the instant decision about what the story is, actually, I think is going to backfire on those who made up the story. I don't get the feeling that I had on Monday about this -- yes, people were concerned -- I'm not getting that.

And if the right wing really believes in this country that -- Rush Limbaugh and others -- that they can somehow turn the president's reputation around by saying, "You're darn right he violated the law, and it's a good thing," I think they're just as confused as they are about their Iraq politics. People aren't buying it anymore.

So not only do I not regret it, I felt an absolute obligation to do it.

the radio spot.

while generic republican candidate x was working with the president to protect the american people and solve the challenges facing america, generic democratic candidate x was trying to filibuster judges and celebrating with the democrats that "we killed the patriot act" (harry reid voice clip). now the democrats want to impeach the president in the middle of a war for ordering the government to listen in on the enemy's cell phone calls. whose side are they on? on nov. 2nd let them know that america wants ideas, not obstruction, and vote for generic republican candidate x.

please. up until now, democrats in office have been able to say, oh that's just the fanatics saying those things, not us. i'm looking at it realistically. if i were to spin, i'd say that this issue has the potential to fracture the democratic party completely. but hey, i'm just a republican, what do i know?
