Posted: 10/17/05 at 12:11pmI don't understand most of these choices. Why would you be ashamed to admit you love these films? THE TOWERING INFERNO, for example was the most successful film of 1975. Millions of people loved it. Others, like SOMEWHERE IN TIME, CARRIE and BILLY MADISON, were also trememdous box-office hits, that remain popular with millions. Why the shame?

Posted: 10/17/05 at 12:13pmSomewhere in Time is a piece of crap, a really bad movie........but it plays on the emotions so well....that it became popular. I cannot watch that movie without crying....BUT, I still realize it's a piece of poop
#6re: 5 'Guily Pleasure' Movies
Posted: 10/17/05 at 12:18pmBut as million love it, I just don't understand why someone would be ashamed to admit they did. Besides, what's a piece of crap is just a matter of opinion. There isn't a bigger piece of crap than THE ENGLISH PATIENT to me, yet they awarded it an Oscar, as Best Picture!

Posted: 10/17/05 at 12:20pmWell, to me, Billy Madison is a quirky and inventive comedy, but not everybody would agree and Carrie can also be very campy, despite its Oscar noms...I love them but, as a movie snob, I wouldn't list them as "great."

I can only think of four, but I've only been up for an hour and at work for half an hour.
Myra Breckinridge
Grease 2
Valley of the Dolls
A Diva's Christmas Carol (granted, it was a tv movie, but I watch it gleefully each year at Christmas time, despite how atrocious it is)

well, convince...I am not really ashamed.....I think there is an art to appreciating a bad movie.
Since I have never been able to get past 30 minutes of the English patient, I'd have to agree with you...

You guys MUST check out THE APPLE....it takes a bit of the "pleasure" out of guilty pleasure, but you still have to see it!
Also, did anyone see the 1982 Australian "New Wave" musical STARSTRUCK? LOVE IT!!!
Oh, and the fun horror flick BLACK CHRISTMAS.

I would list CARRIE as great. The prom sequence is, perhaps, my favorite piece of film making, ever! It's great!

Showgirls
The Skulls
Dirty Dancing
Run Lola Run
There are more, I'm sure...actually some would argue that Dirty Dancing is a good movie. It's really not. But I always like watching it!
EDIT: How could I have forgotten Drumline and Center Stage - two more guilty faves.

Posted: 10/17/05 at 1:20pmI think MYRA BRECKINRIDGE, is a prime example of what is a "Guilty Pleasure". Although, how anyone could find pleasure in watching that piece of garbage, escapes me. Easily qualifies as worst film ever made. VALLEY OF THE DOLLS is GONE WITH THE WIND or CITIZEN KANE by comparison!

Nothing guilty about Run Lola Run. It's a brilliant film and Franka Potente is quite possibly the best actress to be introduced to Hollywood in the past decade.
Mine:
Xanadu
Flash Gordon
Logan's Run
Never Been Kissed
Bring It On

9 to 5
Rhinestone
Fried Green Tomatoes

#20re: 5 'Guily Pleasure' Movies
Posted: 10/17/05 at 2:18pmI dunno about anyone else, but I'd consider Clueless to be a legitimately good movie.

Posted: 10/17/05 at 2:32pmNo way do 'Steel Magnolias' or 'Fried Green Tomatoes' count as guilty - just pure pleasure. You should never feel guilt about the two films that put 'my personal tragedy will not interfere with my ability to do good hair' and 'Face it, girls - I'm older and I have more insurance' out there! I'd also throw in 'Mommie Dearest - again, attaching no guilt - and a recent addition, 'Monster-In-Law'. And a seasonal offering would be 'Miracle on 34th Street'.

Private Eyes!! Yeah!!
Watch out for the Wookalar!
I agree with Run Lola Run as a great pic!
Guilty pleasure is subjective, CM2; do you need to weigh in on every choice? :)
