(500) Days of Summer

I love Joseph Gordon Levitt in that episode of That 70s Show and more or less enjoyed the movie. At first I wanted to hate Zooey's character, but you realize it's just as much Tom's fault because they both knew what they were getting into.

Is this movie depressing? A "love sucks" kinda film?

I try to avoid those while single.

blaxx, it really isn't. Overall, it leaves you with a good, hopeful feeling. Sure, you feel bad for Tom at times, but it's by no means depressing and I guarantee you won't leave feeling sad.

The only issue (not with the film itself, just in general) that I had was relating WAY TOO CLOSELY to Summer, right down to little details like using "Born to Run" as a karaoke song choice. I know I've said some of the exact same things to men, too. It was pretty eye-opening for me, and thus a little painful, but goes to show how realistic the movie's situation really is.

It's a movie that definitely can be appreciated whether or not you're in a relationship.

The ending is a bit corny - just a bit - but I agree it does leave you with a hopeful feeling. The whole point of the film, I feel, is to say there's someone out there for everyone and the person who you think you're "meant" to be with may not be that person at all. And haven't we all, at some point, fallen head over heels for someone because we think they're the one - only to realize they aren't? Tom feels that Summer is the one but Summer isn't interested in a relationship. You want to hate Summer for being such a witch to Tom and you want to hate Tom for being borderline obsessive over this girl... but really, we've all had those same emotions.
