re: 67% of americans support offshore drilling

The US energy policy is castigate the arabs for not pumping more of their oil, wasting what we do use & refuse to help ourselves by using our resources.

The Nuke reactors now in operation in the US avoid the need for more oil powered plants which would basically add to the atmosphere the equivelant of the cars in the US in a day.

re: 67% of americans support offshore drilling

The point for me is if it is going to take 10 years to realize gains from offshore drilling, why don't we really focus on alternate energy means and find something other than oil and coal to run our business. Democrats and Republicans are equally to blame for not having the vision and will to create alternatives. And, the last 7 years under Bush has just exasperated the problem. If Brazil can be energy independent, we can find a way.

And, ethanol is not a solution. The food supply is to critical and there are too many shortages in basic staples in the world to use productive farm land to grow corn for ethanol.

We just have to find a way to expand our vision to find alternatives.

In theory I am not opposed to nuclear energy, but there are problems with storing the waste, and NIMBY issues.

Roxy, I am not quite sure you are trying to say.

re: 67% of americans support offshore drilling

I thought I was quite clear. Instead of trying to help ourselves, we go hat in hand to the arabs . When they will not pump more oil, it is someohow their fault & not ours for our wasteful ways & our refusal to pump our own.

If Saudi Arabia were to have no oil, we would have no use for them.

If Clinton had not barred drilling when he was president, we would be pumping more of our own. Imagine how bad off we would be without Prudoe Bay

Why does France have half their power produced by nuke power & ours only 20 %? Imagine the oil we would save (not to mention the cleaner air) if we produced 50% of our power from nukes. Many environmental groups previously against nukes are now coming around & actually pushing more nuke power.

re: 67% of americans support offshore drilling

I believe offshore drilling has been banned since 1981. Bush 1 was the one that banned drilling after the Exxon Valdez spill. So, blame Bush 1. I am not sure if Clinton extended what was done during the Reagan Administration by Congress and Bush 1 by Executive Order.

What I did not understand was this statement: "The Nuke reactors now in operation in the US avoid the need for more oil powered plants which would basically add to the atmosphere the equivelant of the cars in the US in a day."

I think you explained it - presuming there is no accident, nuclear energy (except for the waste is generates) is far cleaner than oil.

Anything can have an accident from transporting oil to flying to driving. To stop using something or doing something for fear of an accident is counterproductive.

I note you did not correct your statement about Clinton.

And, your response is nonsensical. Risks have to be calculated when assessing whether or not to do something.

The risks associated with a nuclear accident IMO far outweigh that of an oil spill.

Are you willing to have a nuclear reactor in your backyard, or store nuclear waste under your home?

Jane - offshore drilling as part of a comprehensive, strategic energy policy is a fair and reasonable discussion. However, peddling it as a short-term solution to high prices is pandering and misleading. McCain has switched his position at this point in time, and Charlie Crist just happened to change his long-held position in the same 24 hour period? They're both stating that their decisions are based on $4 a gallon. Well, strategic decisions should not be made based on tactical circumstances, and these politicians should be honest about the absence of any short-term impact.

Lets close down Indian point in NYS

The rates will go thru the roof & there will be recurring brownouts & blackouts.

In answer to your question, I would have a Nuke plant in my backyard. I am not a member of NIMBY

Lets close down all nuke plants & let the price of oil really spike. Than we will be safe unless of course we have earthquakes or tornados. Life is full of unknowns. To live in fear of something is not me.

Apparently you cannot read my previous posts, because I am not against nuclear energy.

I am glad you are willing to have a nuclear plant in your backyard. I hope I can continue to afford not to. But hey, if you are OK with it, more power to you.

I worry about the safety and the storage of waste, but read what I write instead of jumping to conclusions. If the government would increase safety standards and security at nuclear power plants (as well as chemical plants) that would be a first good step.

Or, then again, you can just falsely blame Bill Clinton for something else.

i'm moving to within a stone's throw of indian point.

speaking of changing positions, didn't bammy used to be against immunity for the telecoms for their part in intelligence gathering? in fact, didn't almost all of the dems? funny how when it came time to vote they weren't. surely that has nothing to do with there being an election in the fall.

I think there are plenty of folks on this board who'd like to drill Papa. Of course, you'd need the oil before you began drilling.
