7-Year-Old AnthonyG on the Today Show

Me too, Erika.
And to that specifically, I very much agree with Namo's post. To see childhood innocence, hope and optimism stripped away from anyone is disturbing. Prematurely is even worse, but whenever it may happen to each of us... it's hard to understand and deal with.

...if his parents are letting anywhere near a school.
Judging from his on-stage behavior, he doesn't look like he's ever seen another boy his age.

Posted: 12/16/07 at 12:27pmMaybe I was less-than-clear in my first post. If nothing else, Lil TonyG ("Call me Anthony") is the catalyst for many of us in this thread to externalize some of our internalized homophobia, which we're all programmed to have.

Perhaps it was his song choice. Maybe if he'd sung this, he would have come off a bit better.

Namo, well in that case, your comment has no relevance to my reaction.
It wasn't his "gayness" that bothered me at all. In fact, it didn't even occur to me, until you posted your explanation.
It was the fear and craziness in his eyes, and the wind-up-toy performance that he gave. Gay or straight, it's disturbing that he would turn on the "adult Show Biz creature" like that.

Posted: 12/16/07 at 1:47pmmaybe he'll turn into William H Macy's character on Magnolia and this will be the pinnacle of his career!

Posted: 12/16/07 at 2:56pmHe performed on the Ellen show too. I think he is making the rounds to get discovered and try to become a big star.

Namo--I don't at all object to his gayness. I object to his cheesy Vegas lounge singer aesthetic.
I agreed with you because when I was his age, I lip-synched to my parents' LP of "Eddie Fisher at the Winter Garden," something I grew to feel much shame over.
So it isn't my internalized homophobia--it's my interna-liza'd vaudevilla-phobia.

Vaudevilla-phobia is very difficult to get over.
Seek counselling.

re: 7-Year-Old AnthonyG on the Today Show#45
Posted: 12/16/07 at 8:27pmYeah, I saw him on Ellen. He does have a good voice but he was very precocious- in an annoying way. He also moved like a little girl. I also hate when child perfomers wear cute little outfits that are so choreographed to look cute- like his little golf hat. What 7 year old wears a hat like that?
