Bme, he's VERY conservative. From his own mouth, he's said something to the effect that what is perceived as religious fundamentalism is merely adhering to the tenets of the Catholic faith.
Expect no relief in sight for many, many issues, unfortunately.

It's true, not only am I dissapointed it wasn't our little Canadian Cardinal (SOME DAY the Canadians WILL have power....) and the fact that this dude was once a part of the Nazi Youth (against his will, but still)....I am dissapointed b/c he has openly spoken against the gay lifestyle. That being said, that is a longstanding will of the Catholic church, and while it is the biggest beef I have with the church, I know as well as everyone else that to expect total acceptance of homosexuality from the CC (however overdue it is! and trust me, I wish it weren't this way), it just ain't realistic! Let's just hope they'll "let" us use condoms to ward off AIDS...I think that's all we're gettin' from them now.


Hahah it's so bad...when i heard he was German I thought "great, give the Germans MORE power!" jokingly of course, then I heard he was part of the SS Youth!
Umm, but he was JP2's best friend, lets just hope he kept good company!

He might have kept good company, JID, but he's pretty conservative.
Well, not pretty. He is VERY conservative. Probably not the best way to bring the 1 billion members of the Catholic church closer together since you can expect to see a very hardline strengthening of his "core" values.

Did anyone really expect any newly elected Pope to embrace, or at the very least condone, the gay lifestyle? I think not. This is something that we will never see in our lifetime. Same old rhetoric, different Pope.

Yes but he does intend to carry out decentralization a little more than JP2 did.

I just find it ironic that the next World Youth Day is set to be held in Germany next.....I might actually be going to it to anchor for the Canadian Christian television network again.....

I didn't expect him to embrace it, but there have been some fiery, divisive decrees from the Vatican, even in recent years (With the great uniter, John Paul II, calling homosexuals a plague of evil spreading across the world) and one would hope that it wouldn't continue.
But it seems it will.

a) was a member of Hitler's Nazi youth (Yes, I know it was mandatory, but plese, they couldn't have found someone that wasn't?)
b) wrote the Church's doctrine on homosexuality being an "intrinsic evil"

It is possible to think in our lifetime a Pope who is sensitive to gay rights will be elected. Maybe near the end of our lifetime. I think churches have made tremendous strides in that area, just as with treatment and power for women. There is a lot of work to do and Ratzinger is totally a step backward but maybe his few years will lead to a real moderate next time and then who knows...

I know that the pope elect has to have a lot of experience, but they continually choose people that already have one foot in the grave, who knows, the guy looks in great health but the reign of the straightedge ex-nazi might not be long enough to be too damaging.

Well, here's one Catholic who is NOT happy. We had a chance to move forward and I fear we will go backward. I was pulling for a cardinal from Central America.

Maybe one day we can have an Italian Pope again. And maybe someday I'll stop finding JID so damn hot. Ok the second part is never gonna happen.
