QM- Too true, Too true
judy- I think its pretty grim at the moment really.
I wish the Canadians would take over everything, but I'm afraid thats more my country's signature trait.

Smartpenguin, are you an American who wants the Canadians to take over everything? I think I'm in love!
Naw, actually it's good to be powerless- that way no one really gets mad at you! Osama has some beef with us because we helped out the US with somethingorother (gotta love how I pay attention) but we'll always have the Dutch on our side!!
And CM CM, even on the "holiest of threads"! hehe. You rock my socks.

#28re: A GERMAN POPE!
Posted: 4/19/05 at 1:30pmDo you think he will incorporate Adolf into his new Pope name?

I do what I can, you enchantress
But a move to a more canadian lifestyle would be welcome. I'm worried about this pope too. But the pope keeps losing politcal power and isn't as powerful as he used to be. Maybe I should just move to canada.

judy- That would be a big yes indeed, although I'm sure someone will deport me soon, so maybe I'll have to visit you.
poor guy joins the Nazi party once and thats all anyone can talk about. Oh wait, no one in the Horrible Scary Media is talking about it are they? (lots of little sarcastic bits in there, others edited out)

I think we need to keep in mind that as a German teen during Hitler's reign he really didn't have a choice (anyone remember Swing Kids?). So I'm not holding it against him, I just find it ironic.
Funny thing about Germany. They're such a tiny country but they always manage to score vasts amounts of power to bite us in the ass!! Lets just hope this pope has dull dentures.

Very true, although he hasn't exactly lived like he really embraces freedoms.
It would be fun to have dual citizenship, I think.

haha I hardly know the french lyrics, we had to sing them in elementary school, and I made a feeble attempt to teach it to my grade 4 music students this year, but that's it!

As a practicing Catholic, I was pulling for the guy from Nigeria, South America or the ones from Italy. The church needs to allow women priests & priests to marry but doubt it will happen now.
Time will tell. One thing for certain, it will not be a long Papacy & maybe that was one reason they picked him

In a few years, we will be going thru this again. Maybe, by than, the cardinals will think the world is ready for a black or hispanic pope & woman priests etc. I hate to break the news to them but it is ready now.
Hopefully, the damage he will do is minimal

". . .it will not be a long Papacy."
That may be true. But, as so much work has been done already securing the stranglehold on the upper echelon of the church, it might not take much more to make sure it carries forward past Benedict. And maybe that's all he's after.

Posted: 4/19/05 at 7:33pmI think he was the safer choice being so close to the previous Pope and having the same rules as he. Time will tell. He is 78 and they did not want another long reign. Although it seems funny to see him there at the window of the Vatican replacing JPII.

My wife has always had the hots for the master of ceremonies Piero Marini
Oy Vey. Every one interested in the Pope & she is interested in the supporting cast. She says I look like him

Posted: 4/19/05 at 7:59pmWell, tell Mrs. Roxy that if she likes Marini on TV, she'd melt if she met him in person. I met him in Rome 2 years ago - very warm, dancing eyes and a sly smile. I think you'd better keep the Mrs, away from the Vatican. Those restraining orders are a bitch!

God help us all! I just love a good pun...
In all seriousness, the Pope has a power that no other world leader posesses. The Pope has the power to have great influence on many peoples' beliefs. Presidents and Prime Ministers can make laws but they can't get inside peoples' heads (for the most part) like a Pope can. That said, we're in BIG trouble.
I love how Ratzinger is descibed as an opposer of "progressive movements". Why can't these people get it? Progress is GOOD. Ugh...
Well, let's just prey (another pun) that it's a very short papacy.

MEF - I agree. The choice makes sense if you are a Vatican insider. He seems smart and obviously more conservative than 90% of the American church. It was some great drama. I caught it live at an airport.

Could someone answer this question for me-
Millions of young people are upset at the Catholic Church because they feel the only way they can be Catholic is if the church goes forward into the future (this would include priests being allowed to marry, women priests, acceptence of homosexuality, and ok'ing abortion and contraception). However the Cardinals who elect the new pope ALWAYS decide to choose an OLDER CONSERVATIVE cardinal for pope. Now here's my question-
Why are the cardinals picking these men for Pope if it will only lead to the eventual death of the Catholic church?
